I have my computer back and its empty, well I had backed up quite abit but what seems to be missing are mine and hubbies Family Trees. These took years and years and hours and hours of work and they have gone, caput, poof!!! Just like that. I found my back up floppy disks but for some unknown reason they don't work.

So as my hubby is always reminding me you must have 3 sources of back up Grandfather, Father & Son. It does seem abit extreme but it is important. I have used memory sticks before and they have gone phut! So a memory stick, a disk and a spare hard drive copy.

Do it.......... NOW!!!!!! otherwise you will be sorry Confused

Libby, take your floppy discs and see if you can get them copied, the info must still be on there. Also, even though the info appears to be gone from your hard drive, if it hasn't been overwritten with zeros there are companies that will retrieve info. It's how the authorities catch criminals via PC, criminals think they've deleted incriminating info but it's still there. When you delete you tell the PC that it can now use that space, the info is actually still there. Does that make sense?

I meant to say, I did this for my sister when she thought she'd lost important photos. Used some retrieval software.

I have found a file recovery that goes through your computer and tells you whats recoverable, you only have to pay for it if you wish to recover files. The problem I have is I don't know what sort of file I'm looking for. Normally its a 'Gedcom' but I can't see any of those whatsoever  Sad

Can you remember what the letters are after the name of the file, something like

SmithFamily.ged

I've never used this software so don't know the file extension. Also, some software allows a search for filenames without extensions. I can't remember the name of the one I used but I've looked for reviews on recovery software and this one gets good reviews, "Undelete 2009" http://www.diskeeper.com/, there's a trial download.

yes I'm fairly certain they where a 'ged' but it doesn't seem to have shown any 'ged' files in the recovery list Sad
I will try your suggestion next

I think that was the one OH used, with some success, and it's what I was going to suggest as well.  Other than that, there are companies that will run recovery software for you but I should think that'd be a bit expensive...
