The easiest beer to make is as follows.
A 1lb. jar of Malt extract. (i use Holland and Barret)
1 oz. of dried hops, (available in packets from your brewing shop)
1 Gallon of water.
1 sachet of brewers yeast. also from your brew shop. (Youngs do all sorts of brewing yeast's, Malted grains, Hops etc.)
Put all ingredients ,except the yeast into a large pot ,bring to the boil, and simmer very low for 90 mins. Strain through a cloth into a lidded bucket. When at blood heat add sachet of yeasts and alow to ferment for about a week, when it slows down to almost a stop, rack it off carefully into a jug and either bottle putting a half teaspoon of sugar into the bottle before capping it , or put into a container in bulk plus 4 teaspoons of sugar. This gives a good froth when you open a bottle.
I hope you try it as it is a good pint. I do others with crystal malted barley and pale malt ,also a stout with black roasted barley

As above C.P. with the added 3oz. pale malt barley, (available from Youngs at your local brew shop. ) added in the boil for 90 mins. Makes a fuller flavour and higher A.B.V. Brew. Similarly use the same weight of Crystal malt ,or Dark roasted malt to make a dark strong bitter or a stout or Guiness style beer. All very good and VERY drinkable. The sort you would pay £ 2.90 per pint for.
Made 4 gallons this week all diferent, ie. pale, dark, and a stout. well it's bar-b-q- weather isn't it. Also made, 1 gallon of Rhubarb wine, 1 gall. folly that is vine leaves and soft prunings, never tried it but it is said to be very drinkable. We shall see. and to round off i have made ,and drunk 2 gallons Elderflower lemonade, 1 gall. Ginger beer. I bought some Burdock root in our health food shop this morning so i will be having a go at Dandylion and burdock soon.
I've finally managed to get my beer barrels returned and have been told to get brewing ready for a house warming, so I'm going to do your one SL. They are 5 gallon barrels (I've 2) so does your recipe make 1 gal of beer. The only problem is the boiling, I think the largest thing I have is my preserving pan (3 gal) so could I use a few pans then combine after boiling?
Yes Kathy, those are for 1 gallon. so use 5 jars malt, 5 ozs. hops and add 1 sachet of brewers yeast when tepid, You could put all that into say 2 gallons of water then boil it up for 90 mins, when cool put into barrel then add the other 3 galls .of boiled water to it and mix well. adding the yeast. Best of brewing , it's nice beer.
When I was young I used to brew using any old household containers and whatever was available.
