As you may have guessed by the name I am a pest controller.
With the countdown to christmas I always get a rush of telephone calls around the 20th of the month. This is because mums buy the kids selection boxes and stockings and hide them in the loft. When they go to retrieve them they find a mass of silver paper and no chocolate.
That is when they learn they have a mouse problem. Be warned
When we first moved here, about 20 years ago, we knew we had a mouse problem when one of us would be sitting in the bath, and a mouse would come out and have a wash and brush up in the middle of the bathroom floor!
This being a very old house, with walls three feet thick, we sometimes hear a rat in the wall behind our bed - scritchet, scratchet. Nowt we can do about it. It's grim isn't it - happens at our house every now and then and it's an appalling smell. As you say, in an old house with hollow walls, it's only to be expected... _________________ When I married Mr. Right, I didn't realise his first name was Always ...
Unfortunately dying rodent smells are something we get regular calls for. There are deodorising sachets now available that help mask the smell and last week I was sent some info on a new product that is supposed to eliminate all odours just by placing a small sachet in the room.
Like you say though it really is not pleasant.
We live in the country too, and if its not the cats bringing them in alive then getting bored, the only place we have problems is in the loft! Being in a terrace of 4 the loft area is big, we now keep everything in plastic boxes but when I get woken at night (I'm a very light sleeper) by the pitter patter of tiny feet I know its time to put up the mouse poison.
Fortunately this has really only happened in the winter so luckily we don't normally have a problem with the 'pong'!!!!
In our first rented flat a few years back, a few months after we moved in we found a mummified mouse half under the bedside cabinet (it was a furnished flat). At least it didn't smell.
And one morning while sat on the loo a mouse ran between my feet. Boy did it make me jump! _________________ Aqui, T and Baby Jack!
We have a mummified rat (still has its whiskers!) which turned up when we were having renovation work done here. It was over a doorway. It is now on a high shelf in the kitchen, along with the cat skull and child's tackety book, which were also found over doorways. The two latter were to guard the house against witchcraft and it's always possible that the rat was too . . .
Ratman - worth knowing about the deodorising sachets - we had this particular dead rat when we briefly had the house on the market. You should have seen people's faces when we explained what the pong was! _________________ http://codlinsandcream.blogspot.com/
