I had the blue patterned fabrics in my stash, they're from a batch named "little house on the prairie", very pretty denim blues. Posted: 06 Mar 2006 08:06 am Post subject: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh my goodness, I have finally realised whats wrong with me and I have to say that it may not just be n's doing either...I am now obsessed with seams and selvedges, I have a rapidly growing 'stash' and now I spend a large part of my time going around charity shops for things that I could cut up to make into things, I dream about wool and tensions swatches... All of this in the space of about 2 months, before christmas I didnt even know what a selvedge was! I have to say that I think there are several of you in this together in an attempt to take over the world and turn it into a GIANT QUILT.... come on own up! you know who you are... PS. She's got two wardrobes full (literally - the bags fall out if you open the doors) of fabrics in the spare room, 20 storage boxes of fabric on shelves in her work room and rolls of fabrics leaning against the workroom wall. Other than that, charity shops are ok but where we live they aren't high on fabrics. If you go to a shop and see a fabric you like, then just buy a bit! Ok so it's not a cheap way of having a stash but at least you'll have bits that you like. Another good one is to contact fabric shops and ask if they've got any leftovers from rolls of fabric. The charity shops in the town just have old blankets for pets and I don't see material as such, but just in case. For example - to make a place mat that is washable and heat proof for the table. They are the easiest fabrics to work with and if you want to make something like placemats then they won't melt!!!!! I always check the offcut bin at the local sewing shop, I've been eyeing up some of J's soon to be outgrown clothes which are mostly cottons. And I browse ebay and see what's on that I like. If you're using second hand clothes for cutting up, have a good look at the age of the fabric, J's clothes are okay because she grows out of them so quickly that the fabric is practically new still, I wouldn't use something too old otherwise the fabric could deteriorate very quickly and I'd be heartbroken for that to happen once I've put so much effort into making a quilt or something. It's tightly rolled so it does fluff up when you wash it.
