Not at all, it's nice to know of smaller producers who care about what they're producing. It's a bit of an issue for me...factory farming, something I don't like at all and scares me to see them "taking over". Our local farm shop used to buy milk from a fairly local dairy, they were bought out by a factory farm so the farm shop tried to source another local supplier, it took them months which is shocking considering we're surrounded by farms here.

being small caring producers (well thats what i feel we are) is hard you get mocked by bigger producers all the time, both me and OH are famers by generations, his parents long since retired, mine still going though should have retired years ago, anyway with my parents is my younger brother, he calls us "ma & pa larkin"why "cause we dont live in the real world " the only reason for that is he produces pork from indoor raised pigs yuk, we produce pork from pigs that roam freely in fields, you tell me who is right ??? also we NEVER want to get so big that the animlas become machines, the ones we have are our friends, they love to see us and we them, i dont want to go out to feed impersonal animals, whatever the breed.
We do this because we love the animals, want the breeds to survive, and i want my children to eat quality products that i know what they contain.
sorry everyone, i'll get of my soap box now, it os just that i agree Jesse and it makes my blood boil, non grazing cows, birds without light, whatever next, i dread to think

Its good to hear that some people do care about there animals Paula. I'm a vegetarian because of the way that animals are treated like machines and not cared about, so its great to hear about people like you paula

Meatrix has links to PETA which is never a good thing. Watch that poster as I think the NFU would question the M&S element as they famously were the ones that had single supplier contracts.
With milk always remember that it's the processor that sets the price, when the supermarkets did add 3p a pint the producer eat the money long before it got the farmers. Also look back and see that it was the big estate farms that caused the problem by scrapping the milk marketing board so they could shaft the small farmer.

Well PETA has a Veggie agenda.
Not come across Lynx
ALF I have serious issues with. Releasing mink into the wild helped no one not even the mink.

Thats why I stopped with the ALF I wont deny I didnt take part in some activities but they went overboard with stuff I didnt agree with too, Lynx were Anti fur ( the people who did the bleeding catwalk fur fashion show), Peta I was with mainly to try and stop the way animals were transported and treated, I still remain devoted to trying to prevent cruelty in animals but obviously as you mature and understand more your ideas change ie.. I used to be a hunt sab in my teens! now the fox is my enemy. I was even veggie once

Ah you see we don't wear fashion fur in Wilts, it's to damn wet
As for being Veggie, doesn't compute sorry just don't understand. If you weren't meant to eat them why are they made of meat??
Transport, yes totally agree with that and very cross that time and time again local slaughter houses have been shutdown. Kill locally and quickly and then move the meat.

Hmm, it very nearly did! Don't really see the point though, life is too short!
I love that smiley face, although it usually has no relevance whatsoever to my posts!

Ok, if the meatrix upset you, don't watch this one, just refer people who are completely unaffected by it to this:
www.meat.org
I have to admit, this is going to cause shopping-related problems, because I don't think I can stomach battery-farmed chicken any more
OH has to go to a chicken abbatoir once a week to keep them supplied with nuts and bolts, so he gets "staff purchases" which avoid all the delays caused by going through excessive packaging, transport, freezing, and waiting in supermarket depots... All well and good for us, but doesn't help their quality of life. At least he's told me they don't hang the chicken up by their feet, and there's people check that the killing bit actually does it's job, and so on. He says they're actually quite calm, too.
I was just wondering, those of you that keep chickens and use some for meat: don't you have to use an abbatoir if you're going to sell the meat? And if you're not selling it, what do you do?

Wearing fur just cannot be justified. Did anyone else see the McCartney thing on T.V last night?
I was veggie once, but I do eat meat now but not a awful lot. I like getting bits from Alison and We have eaten some of Debbie's lamb.
Turkey's were fantastic

PETA strike again.
Anyone notice that these are all US based inidents and in the example of the 'secret' filming they more than likely caused the turkey to get it's neck broken by spooking the birds.
Worth checking out http://www.american-partisan.com/cols/2003/gibson/qtr3/0903.htm and many others to find the sad truth behind PETA.

Well, that one says (approximately) at the end "do the best thing for the animals, become a vegitarian", which is a bit of an odd argument, and that doesn't influence me at all. However, my point with posting that is that there *are* cruel practices being carried out, and the only way they will stop is for individuals to decide to get their meat from suppliers who don't use these space-saving and money-saving tactics.

Totally agree, but remember that UK farms can't stock as tightly as that. Our standards are very much high. If it isn't UK then don't buy it.

Very true. At least we're part way sorted, compared to other countries. And like I said, at least they keep the chickens the right way up in our abattoirs...

I'd like to see the standatds set higher, but sadly in this country animal charities are drowned out by the RSPCA scum who worry more about public image and their new HQ than making a real difference. I'm still awaiting an apology for they leaving to supermarkets and the NFU to set the new poultry minimum spacing requirement. On the up side it shows the real facts that supermarkets and the NFU care about the animals and giving the public a quality product butnot at any price (can you tell this is a rant area of mine )

it's shocking isn't it. I saw photos last year and had no idea they were bred like that, that's when we decided to hatch our own and eat the cockerels despite comments from uneducated friends and family about how cruel we were being, it might sound cruel killing your own birds but when you see how factory produced chickens are it makes you think. What I did find out though was the people who are the most horrified that we would raise and then kill our own chickens were also the people who refused point blank to look at the reality of how factory farmed chickens are produced and they are the ones wearing their blinkers buying up tesco value chicken and raving about what good value they're getting
