Ok here we go
Aladdin it is
Once upon a time, a long time ago in old Peking there is this kid called Aladdin who lives with his mom, Mrs Twankey, who runs the local Chinese laundry- lots of steam and things, drawers hanging on the line and people running around worrying about whether their suits will be ready for next Thursday.
Aladdin is a good boy, almost to the point of being school swot and runs errands for his mom delivering all the laundry to the punters. One day he is doing just this when he sees the Pricness Wong, daughter of the emperor passing by in her litter (that’s a chair thing and not in a tray for your cat) and he thinks she is the bees knees, falls in love instantly- silly boy.
So off he goes to the palace with a tea towel or two and makes a plea to the emperor who tells him get stuffed, no chance, don’t even try to ring her on the mobile you little worm, not without a mill or so in the bank, not that that would get him anywhere today as his account is with HBOS. What to do, what to do. (An early chance here for a “woe is me” routine methinks.)
All despondent and somewhat crestfallen, Aladdin wanders off home doing the breast beating routine and bumps into his cousin Ethelazar, a fairly unpleasant type who seems to be the one in the family who always is just one step in front of the Bill…in the second world war he would probably be a spiv and be able to sell you a watch or pair of nylons. He talks Aladdin into helping him get a lamp, he tells Aladdin it is just this old piece of junk that he wants to flog on and Aladdin being a sandwich short of a picnic it appears agrees as Ethelazar tells him that great riches will be his if he will but help his cousin. Ho hum what a bore that kid is. And stupid.
So Aladdin gives the guy a hand (I think this is where the new lamps for old thing comes in) and gets the old oil lamp considers it a bit on the dull side and tries to clean it up thereby giving the cue to the genie of the lamp who pops out and being an amenable type suggests that as a reward Aladdin should have the three wishes. I think that who ever is Aladdin should play this bit on their own as it will give us an insight into their psyche.
Ethelazar is a tad miffed by the whole affair by now, after all he was the one who wanted the lamp in the first place so he up and goes to the palace, forces his way into Wong’s room and steals her away into the night. Great chance here for a “Help, I’ve been wronged!” scene for Wong I think.
So now we have a rescue scene, as Aladdin, his mother and the genie all rally round to rescue the princess who is carrying on like a drama queen (and on and on) killing Ethelazar in the end. Anybody who wants to get in on the killing act jumps in here, don’t’ care what they do just as long as there is a bit of a big scene.
Reunited at last, the princess and Aladdin do a couple of songs just for luck, release the genie from his lamp-like prison and because he is a nice little boy and made three good wishes, Aladdin now has enough money to marry the princess, take his mom to the palace to live and the whole cast do a high kick off and the curtain falls just in time to get to the pub.
