Alternative healingUntil three years ago I worked part time in my current line of work but also had my own Aromatherapy and Healing Clinic working from home. It certainly didn't pay the mortgage but it was very rewarding. Especially when a client phones up and says "I feel great today thankyou".. Very humbling to be able to make someone feel better.
Then I had the chance of promotion which meant packing it in but offered financial stability without handouts. So I went for it.
Am really fed up now working fulltime paper pushing but it does pay the mortgage. I can't use the snug as my the therapy room anymore because the dogs live in there now
I would love to get back into this line of work and would welcome comments and suggestions. I have all the knowledge and experience but now lack confidence and would also have to take rent in a clinic.

All I can say is I've hated the last three/four years worth of work but it's paid the bills. Some time you just have to get your head down and get through the cr*p bit.
Could you do it as a home visit?

i agree with you there mark
you have to do what you have to do until you find a way through to the other life again
it will happen i am sure but you have to find your niche and then work towards it....
remember it's often true that it's not what you know but who you know so maybe you need to renew some old contacts CP and perhaps something will come up that will get you back on the road you want to be on....

When you say take "rent in a clinic", do you mean at an alternative healing centre? Could this not work if you did a few hours per week to start off with. Perhaps there might also be someone who would like another therapist to work with, sharing the load and helping to build up the confidence again. Another avenue could be to check the local colleges for vacancies, more alternative therapy courses are springing up now and I regularly see advertisements for lecturers.
You could of course get Lloyd to build an extra bit onto the house..............

Yes Kathy, paying rent for a room in a clinic. There happens to be a room available two days a week not far from here. As for clients, I know I would have several immediately, I still get calls from people asking when I'm starting up again!
I must say when I did one of my courses, the lecturer was useless, I kept thinking I could do her job in my sleep
But I don't imagine my boss would consider me going part time and I certainly don't have the stamina to work all day then have enough energy to work in the evenings.
Hohum lots to think about, thank you for all your comments, its good to have a place to bounce a few ideas about

oh gosh
i know where you are coming from there.....
1, with the working from home bit
2, with the renting a room.......
3, with the lack of imagination when deciding on a name for the practise......lol....i ended up using my name and letters too.....
one thing i did do tho ( not sure if you have thought about this ) is to get my name on the NHS register.......easy to do, and costs about £50.....gets your name '' out there ''.....google it......
once you are on it, all the practitioners incl doctors, have your name and proffesion to hand, plus it looks good on your bis cards too.......my bis really picked up after that.

I did that too, spent hours and hours and hours trying to decide on a name, and came up with...........my name with letters after. Most inspired
Good idea about the NHS register thanks. What line are you in?
Ooh, and I keep meaning to ask Kathy how GL is getting on with her herbalism.
KATHY???????????????

GL (my daughter Mountain Dweller) is developing a sideline to practise with the herbalism and has irons in the fire regarding where to practise and who with (if anyone).

She's managing the organic cafe at the moment and developing new menus along with developing the outside catering part of the business.
She's also working with some people planting local herbs on an estate for herb walks. Busy lady which is why she's not posting just now!

My overwintered psychic powers are coming back to life. I nearly got up last night to ask you how GL was doing. Then she answers my post

I'm a physiotherapist in private practice and I also do Traditional Chinese and Western Acupuncture. I manage to make a good living out of this (because, I feel, it is used by clients when they are in pain, to help them to get back to normal ASAP). I have rooms which I rent out to therapists and have had aromatherapists, reflexologists, a medical herbalist and a clinical hypnotherapist. Unfortunately non of the therapists continued in business for more than a year before packing it in.
Perhaps it is because they are not main stream therapies and the public do not know enough about them. None of them seemed to generate repeat business which is essential when you have to pay the rent week by week.
It is VERY difficult to get any business up and running and unfortunately the alternative therapies appear to be something that you have to do as a paying hobby while making your living in another ay.

I think it also depends on the area you're in. There are quite a few thriving "alternative therapy" practices around here in Fife and also in Edinburgh some of which have been around for quite a few years.
