This was based on a pattern from the Creative Living forum and for which I give grateful thanks!
I use the same format for all my hats, changing needle sizes and number of cast on stitches depending on the wool and head size. A lot is guess work but I've now got a pretty good idea about what works for which situation.
This was the original pattern
Cast on 90 sts, knit until the required depth - 6"+ or so. The brim will roll as it is all stocking stitch, but that's part of the design.
Decrease as follows:
1st round: K13, K 2 tog, rep to end
2nd round:Knit
3rd round: K12, K 2 tog, rep to end
4th round:Knit
Continue in this way until 48 sts, then dec every round to 6 sts - you will need to change to dp needles before then.
Cut yarn and draw up through remaining stitches.
I changed this and knitted in rib for 12 cm, then stocking stitch for 17 cm. I used larger needles to create a looser stitch for the slouch effect so started off with 66 stitches instead of 90.
Hope that makes sense, just shout if it doesn't!

There not that bad, just fiddly, to be honest the more you practice the easier it becomes!!!

You could do the hat on straight pins, works out the same, just means you have the seam to sew at the end. Instead of reading "round," just read "row," does that make sense?
I have to say, since discovering the joys of circular needles I'd like to do ALL my knitting on the round, I just haven't gotten the hang of converting the larger items. My Mother has recently had real problems knitting as her shoulders get sore. She's going to try knitting with circulars (you can do straight knitting on circulars) as you can hold your hands low down, very little shoulder movement required.
If you're interested in doing circular knitting I taught myself using these videos

OOo! brilliant, on another forum they are knitting two socks at one time on two circular needles, I just couldn't get it but now I have a vid to watch I should crack it (I hope)

Kathy, I've got as far as the shaping, did you follow the same decreasing?.I started with 66 stitches.
|
Kathy
|
66 is a multiple of 11 so start with "knit 9, knit 2 tgther all the way round: knit 1 row, knit 8, knit 2 tgthr all the way round, and so on.
If you want a wee stalk on the top decrease to 6 stitches and knit these till your stalk is the desired length.

Here is my hat, modelled by son no 2's girlfriend. Not quite as shapely as Kathys, but Jenny is happy with it. I used size 5.5 needles and some chunky wool.Hats are addictive, Ihave just done a short version for OH, who always has cold ears. No photo from him, he; s embaressed .
