Anyone grown woad?Being a spinner I`m quite interested in the thought of dyeing wool etc, so was pleased when I bought a woad seedling last year ar a craft day. I planted in the allotment and it grew into a nice sturdy rosette about a foot across. This year it threw up several flower stems. I`ve let it seed over the bed it was in, but have also collected about half a teacup full of seed.
Question is...what next? Do I start them off this year (it seems a bit late to me) or store them till next year and start them off...when? There`s not a lot of info out there on Google. I do know I`ll need a lot of leaves from first year rosette plants to be able to obtain even a modest amount of indigo, but I`m willing to devote at least one bed (4` x 16`) to the project.
Any hints, tips and links welcome.

I've never grown it so I'm no help I'm afraid, but I'd love to give it a try. I remember seeing a lady growing it, and dying with it, on Gardeners World once and really wanted to give it a go.

Save your seed and sow next March in modules and plant out late may. It will give you a good crop around three feet high i beleive you use the leaves and stems so it should yeild quite a lot in that area. Best of luck with it.
