Bats . . .

As I sat here typing, one has just flown in, circled the light and then flown out again. I've shut the door now! Before the attic was done up, we used to have them down here much more regularly especially in August, as we had a brood roost upstairs. The ones we see are Pipistrelles and Long-Eared Bats - think the one I just saw was the latter, from size alone. Just as well Tam's not here, as they always seem to favour her room and she is petrified of them!

I don't mind bats at all, they're lovely to see. At my dad's farm we used to get fruit bats flying in the early evenings. We don't see many bats here, just a few during each summer.

I love bats - we like to sit outside in the summer and watch them emerge at dusk, there are 2 types - small and large but don't know any more than that Very Happy

I don't mind them outside, but am still not too keen at meeting one as I pad, half-asleep, to the bathroom around 2.30 a.m. They used to have a brood roost in our attic, and still come back and visit. If you go up to middle daughter's attic bedroom and squeak, the little dears squeak back at you from underneath the roof tiles.

Aww bless, they know a good billet when they find it! Laughing

I've just read about a bat detector which you take on a walk witgh you and it helps to 'hear' the bat noises and helps to identify the different species. That would be handy in our garden - brazier lit, wine and beer flowing, waiting for the bats and the first stars to emerge - come back summer!

I can still hear the bats that are near my dad's house, right on the edge of audible range when they're fluttering about. My parents used to look at me blankly when I said I could hear them squeaking, I guess their hearing range had gone down too much by that point!
