Broad Beans

I have never grown them before and know that they should go in, in the autumn. When I was blog hoping today, someone has just planted some in loo rolls in there greenhouse, will this work??
Aqui

what variety do you have?
Lizzie

We've always planted ours in the spring and they've been fine.  We've still got some of last years in the freezer.

Mmmmmm - I love wide beans  Very Happy

You plant broad beans in the autumn to give them a 'start' earlier the following year and get an earlier crop.  These they call 'winter beans'.   BUT you run the risk of them being eaten by mice or rats (the beans)   Some get hit by the bad weather - but you do get some survive.

There is not usually much difference when you plant them in spring - the later ones catch up  and crop a couple of weeks later.

Yes you can grown them in loo rolls or peat pots -  I have gone off loo rolls as planters as I found that they sprouted tiny little mushroom/toadstalls and I wasn't keen on them from the organic point of view.   I just make a hole and drop them in and cover it up now - but not yet - February when the soil warms up, usually.

If you plant them them the same way Libby......in the greenhouse....they'll be fine (I take it you don't have mice in yours?) Mine will be going in the greenhouse in the next few days (hopefully),,,,if I can get the decorating out of the way!!!!

I don't think the mice have found the greenhouse yet  Very Happy
