Have been to B&Q and they don't have it.
Where do you buy it and roughly how much does it cost, please.
Also, which soap did you make first, does lard soap really smell of lard and what is the difference between lard and dripping.
OH says he will do this with me so the pressure is on to get it all organised!

I bought my caustic soda from Homebase, it was less than £3, can't remember the exact sum. I used the basic vegetarian recipe with the solid block of Pura (53p) and added essential oil at trace. I am still using that batch you saw n, and the stuff I boiled (never read instructions properly ) gets grated and used for laundry.

Not sure of the difference between lard and dripping, sure someone will know though!!

Now I feel really stupid. There's a Homebase next to B&Q but I was just too tired to walk across the car park
Will try tomorrow.
Have found lavender Home Fagrance oil from the body shop on the shelf, the sort of thing you put in a burner to make a room smell nice... will that work as a fragrance?

No n, to the fragrance, I think it should say in small print somewhere, "Not to be used on the skin", I suppose if you're not sensitive it could be ok but I would use pure essential oil.

I am still gathering all the ingredients. Got the caustic soda from a little hardware shop in nearest town (7+miles away) - no home base or B&Q's for miles!

Got beer thermometers off ebay (new) after trawling so many shops and chemists. Got lavender oil from the village pharmacy - they ordered it for me.

Got the goggles and mask - now just got to get the confidence - any idea from where and how much - do you have to order it - is there a long wait?

I fancy making my own soap powder - our nearest Boots is over 13 miles away - better wait until I need something else

...or a plumbing merchant should have caustic soda. Agree with Kathy on the fragrance oil, it must be an oil suitable for cosmetics/soapmaking, some home fragrances for use in burners, candles etc are not suitable for cosmetic purposes. Pure essential oils from places like holland & barrat, boots, sainsburys (supermarket) etc will be okay.

The soaps I've made that I'm happy with are the baby soap towards the back of the book, because it's suitable for sensitive skins, I've since adapted that recipe changing the essential oils for fragrance as I didn't like the smell of carrot oil, think I used lavender oil last time. The honey and beeswax soap is lovely, that's the recipe I used for the soap I sent to you n, except I added fillers (crushed cinnamon stick, grated nutmeg) and instead of using honey I used cinnamon and juniper berry essential oil. But if you use the recipe in the book there's no need for essential oil if you're having difficulty getting it or too expensive, the fragrance is very subtle from the honey and is a lovely soap.

i got my caustic soda from b and q so i am surprised they didn't have it.....

did you ask a member of staff?

they usually just look at you blankly as they haven't head of things like caustic soda but at least i found some there

i want to have another go and make a beeswax one but my supplier keeps forgetting to bring it to me.....

i enjoy the process and like the end result

my problem is storage for the 43 week cure....at present i only have a bit of space under our bed

Nanny - what are you trying to do to me. I thought that I had run out of time as well as confidence.

The only thing under my bed is carpet! No rooms even for dust!

I will have to think of some where to put it.

At least that it will be quicker than I thought

She's a lass huh? Has me in hysterics - it the water over the border that does it to 'em.

We are a sane and sober lot here in Nofolk
