Chicks, the next installment!

Here they are now  Very Happy

TheGirlsMum

They look happy... They look very similar to ours although ours are 3 weeks old and off heat and have had a few chances of grass. Not today tho!
Libby

Blimey Shocked how many have you got? Are they for a new egg laying industry or for food?
Becki

There are 18. They only have heat at night. We are waiting for 1 of the houses to be free before they go outside. I will probably be selling some to the lady at the stables. We need to keep some because we arn't getting enough eggs at the moment.
Libby

I know what you mean, my four now 2 yrs old have really slowed in the egg laying department and to be honest I can't afford to have them put down so they just scratch away living the life of 'Riley'!!
Fortunately my neighbour has just got some new chooks and theres only 2 of them living in there house so I buy eggs from her at a discounted price!!!
Kathy

So sweet Becki, a big hatching success there.  Very Happy

My 4 girls lay either 3 or 4 a day, they are coming up to 2 yrs. If I don't give them greens or fruit when I let them out and put them in I'm lucky if I get 1 egg. Creatures of habit aren't they!  Laughing
Becki

The layers are a year old, the buffs are abit younger. By the time these get laying we should have timed it more or less right.
Bovey Belle

Libby - we had our hens laying when they were 4 and even 5 years old still.  Are yours in moult or something, or perhaps laying out somewhere?  Two years is no age for a chicken to stop production!
nanny-now and forever

agree there although they do slow down after the initial spring thing

i still get one or two a day from my three so happy with that

gladys the turkey still sitting on her 9 eggs this morning ...only about  a week to go but this morning we saw fox footprints in the sand school so now a bit worried....

At two, productivity shouldn't be dropping off much yet, surely?

Are they not simply off lay maybe?

Putting them down is free anyway. Take the feet in one hand, grasp the head in the other and give a swift pull on the hand holding the head.
Kathy

Shocked  Shocked

Arr! yes I know but we did it to one once and the bloomin thing wouldn't die, Shocked  and no it wasn't the twitches it was still very much alive and kicking, I think it had been working out with Mike Tyson the neck it had on it. Took us ages, wasn't pleasant for the chook or us, now hubby refuses point blank to do it again Confused
