Compost

I am a hopeless composter. It never works for me.

My neighbours on the other hand have loads and its good stuff. They have built a 3 bay unit, which they turn from bay 1 to 2 and 2 to 3, 3 then goes into black plastic compost bins the type the councils give out.

So I obviously need to turn the stuff but the problem I have is lack of space, I can just about fit two bins in, I have tried to move them round so they are in the sun more but whether that will work or not I don't know! Any suggestions?

I rarely turn mine. I just chuck in all the stuff as and when I have it. No special method. Occassionally water it when it's hot (ah - remember that?!?) T sometimes pees on it. That's about it really.

But when I started the bins I threw in whatever worms I found when digging the garden/ It's now teeming with worms.

I also leave an inch-ish of rotted compost/soil in the bottom when I dig it out (mine are on slabs, not direct on soil).

It takes about 6 months in winter and 2-4 months in summer to make the good stuff.

We have a council composter,we have tried doing allsorts to make compost but nothing works, so now OH puts all the grass cuttings into it, then this time of the year when our garden dustbin hasn't got anything much in it, he take out all the grass cutting puts them in the garden bin and the council take it away, at least we don't have that awful rotting grass smell in the garden bin in the summer. You can buy products like "garotta" which you add to the compost which speeds up the process too, Libby.

I know Lloyd, but everyone tells you its a good mixture of contents that makes it work and we don't seem to get the variety of contents needed, if you see what I mean.

We've got a large area for compost and everything goes on except cooked food (attracts rats). Old fleece composts well if you can get hold of any. We don't turn it.

I was looking through one of my vast amount of catalogues and saw this I thought it would be ideal for a garden which doesn't have much space and if it does what it says on the label and converts compost in approx 6 weeks I could probably manage with just two bins. One to fill whilst this one is making compost and this one. The other added bonus as far as I am concerned is I can roll it to where I need it and open it and fork it out, no major heavy lifting!!!
