Cotton reel and four pins

when i was likkle way way back in the mists of time i used to do this knitting kind of thing with a cotton reel and four panel pins that produced like a rope thingy out the bottom of the cotton reel useing mostly end pieces of my mams knitting wool i remember gettin this long multicoloured "rope" that you could sew together to make spirally type items like egg cosies
Does any one still do this ?
I also remember using cardboard squares with the top and bottom cut with a pinking scissors wrapping wool around the serations and using a bent weaving needle to produce woven wool squares which could be sewn into quilts or in my case place mat,s Very Happy also the mystical art of useing card circles to make woolly pompoms  Very Happy
