Crochet workshop (sort of)

Right then, I've chosen a square, it looks to be fairly simple involving chains and double crochet. Picture and pattern here:

The first thing to do is go here and practise a chain and a single crochet as well as starting to read what the abbreviations mean. When you've mastered a couple of rows post a photo, I'll be doing this too as I've never followed a pattern before. http://craftydaisies.com/2007/05/22/learn-to-crochet-lesson-1/

If there's anything in the videos not clear just say as there's diagrams in my book on how to hold the hook etc.

My photo isn't clear so I'll type out the instructions when we're ready to start.

How long do you want to practise this bit? Smile
Libby

Defo joining in with this!!! Off to find crochet hook and wool!!!
Lizzie

I'd like to join in too, but probably not while I'm in the office ... Laughing
Aqui

thanks kathy! i will have a go when j hopefully sleeps later!
Aqui

well i've read/watched the instructions and, probably setting myself up for a fall, but it looks fairly simple. fiddly yes, though.
Aqui

please miss please miss. I've finished! (class swot!)

done - chain, single crochet and turn. can't take a pic yet as j is asleep and the flash might wake him. it's not the neatest thing ever, but we can work on that!
Lizzie

Yup - I've followed the instructions and now have the smallest piece of crochet in the world  Laughing

Edited to say that I can't quite see how what I've got on my crochet hook could make a lovely square like the one in the picture, but I'm sure it'll all become clear in time... Very Happy
mc55

oh darn, I have no idea where my crochet hook is .. hmmmm, will have to have a scout around.  Can I use any wool ?
Kathy

Anything wool all MC, I haven't done mine yet but should get it done tomorrow.  Laughing
Jojo

Everytime I go on the link my computer says program not responding,so don't think I can join you all in this one sorry Sad
Kathy

I'll try and upload some diagrams if you like Jojo, let me know.  Smile
Jojo

That would be good if you could Kathy, I would like to see if I can remember how it's done Smile
Kathy

Busy tomorrow but should be able to do it at the weekend.  Smile
Jojo

Thanks Smile
Kathy

I've started scanning, I should have it done by tonight.  Smile
Kathy

Here are the first 3 steps, practise this then let me know when you're ready for the next bit!

The first thing is to know how to hold the hook then make a slip knot and then a foundation chain.

Jojo

Thanks kathy I will have a go Smile
Jojo

Right Kathy I have done that bit,so forward please Smile
Kathy

Ok Jojo!

The next bit is knowing how to do a turning chain, the pics a bit small so let me know of you need it resized. Once this is done all that is needed is a "double crochet" then you're ready to make a square.

Has anyone else tried any of this yet, I've done the steps to get me to the square, now I just need to see if I can read the pattern to make the square!

Jojo

That bits not so clear Kathy could you enlarge it a bit please Smile
Kathy

Is that better?
Lizzie

I'm going to have a go at this when I get home ...
Jojo

Thanks thats great kathy
mc55

well I've found my hook, but not got any wool yet.  It looks very complicated  Shocked
Kathy

It's not MC, trust me, easier than knitting!
Do you want me to send you some wool to get you started, PM me if you do, I've got plenty here.  Embarassed
Lizzie

I'm afraid I couldn't make hide nor hair of those instructions - I must have missed something crucial, or maybe I'm just being hard of thinking!

If I get 10 minutes to myself this weekend, I'll have another go from the start...
Kathy

Shall I get the instructions for double crochet up then, has everyone mastered the basics yet!
Jojo

Like jellycat I did not follow the last instructions,I have won a beginer book from e.bay and will try with that,so you carry on Kathy I will still look at the stitches you put on here Smile
Kathy

I do find it easier using a book, or printing out instructions from the net. Does anyone still want to do a square later on after mastering the basics?
Lizzie

Yes please - I really like the look of the square in the first picture but I just can't work out how to do it.  I can manage chain, single crochet and double crochet but putting them together to make that square is beyond me!  It's not like the granny squares I used to make.

I am being rather hard of thinking I think.... Embarassed
Kathy

I'll see if I can find something that explains better how to put the square together. I struggle with this too as the square is never just quite right. My Granny always used to start mine off for me, probably why i struggle now!

I've got more books in the house, I'll check them out today.  Smile
Aqui

oh dear. i started so well and then it all came to a grinding halt. i'd love to try a square ti see how it all goes together.

i've been studying the blanket gran crocheted for me when i was a baby - which i still use as a lap blanket in the winter - but i just can't work out how she did it! she's not well enough now to ask her. Sad
Kathy

Ok, I've found another link that tells you how to crochet a square using the easiest stitch, the single crochet. It looks straight forward and the pics are clear so I'm going to see if I can get a decent square done! http://www.learntoknit.com/instructions_cr.php3
Jojo

I got my book from e.bay today,it's called Twilleys book of instant Crochet and it looks ok,but the last page you put on kathy seems to show things more plainly so I will have a go again,I bought a larger hook off the market today so that might help as well Smile
Kathy

Well I hope you all get the hang of it, I've got "plans" for later on. To do with squares and reducing wool stashes....................
Jojo

This is the bit I have managed it's not great but I am going to try and go on to the triple now but don't hold your breath Laughing
Kathy

cheers  cheers  cheers

Brilliant Jojo, I hope to get my square done at the weekend. All my previous efforts have looked like triangles, they went in at the sides, think I've got it sussed now though. Smile
Jojo

Sorry I made the page out of shape, but can't get the image upload to work Sad
Kathy

I've fixed it Jojo.  Smile
Kathy

This is my small square, I did a double crochet as I couldn't get onto that website.
I've ordered an easy crochet pattern for scarves, I'm determined to master following a pattern without wonky edges!

Has anyone else had another go at this?

Kathy

Colder weather is coming and after Boveys talk about crochet I feel my fingers itching again. I did manage to follow a pattern but didn't like the effect with the wool I was using so ripped it out.

Did anyone else manage to get a square done?
