dishwasher v washing upIs a dishwasher (run only when full) more or less environmentally friendly than washing up once a day by hand?

My guess would be that it takes more power to run the machine than to heat a bowl of water?

a dish washr uses about 12 - 15 litres of water per cycle, it takes the same energy to heat the water but will use a bit more for the pumps and motors, the thing with dish washers is that they can hold 4 or 5 bowls worth of washing up, so if only used when full they say it is more economical and enviromentally friendly.
not sure myself

I have a dishwasher which is a AAA energy thingy, I use the economy wash which takes 2 hours (how that is economy I will never know) it is only set off when full and I never put pans or casserole dishes in it, so they get done by hand
I don't mind washing up by hand in fact I quite like it, especially when the Rayburn is lit as we have lashings of hot water. Its my other half who hates it and he does insist on putting pans in the dishwasher which I have to re-wash when its finished
So not very energy efficient here

I have a dish washer but don't use it much,I find it comes in handy when the family are around, but when there is only two of you it's quicker to wash up, however my children who have familys use them all the time and I think when used fully loaded they are very good, plus I saw a program which said it is more environmentally friendy because the new machines don't use as much water as they used too and very little detergent.

In 27 years of marriage. we,ve never had a dishwasher.
Never really needed one, or had space in the kitchen for one.

In my first 20 year marriage I never had time to be without one.
Life is too short to be spent doing meaningless tasks at the sink or anywhere else.

Lots to ponder there. Thanks.
T usually doesn't mind doing the washing up (I cook, so it seems fair division of labour to me!) but occassionally when I've been having a mad cooking session it takes him over half an hour. We only have 2 hours as a family in the evenings.
