Essential/most useless baby item?

OK - here starts my avalanche of baby questions!

What is the one item of baby-related gear that you could not do without and why?

And what item was your biggest waste of time/money?
muntjac

baby wipes and nappies .. terry ons of course not them blooming paper bags that flop around little butts looking like overloaded rucksacks for gerbils

If you are even slightly thinking about more than one sprog then new style terry nappies. We were talked out of them and regretted ever since.

Worse thing - bottle warmer for the car. I swear it would only work if you travelled 400 miles.
Leonie2

most useful thing if you don't drive is a good pushchair with large underneath basket for loading "everything but the kitchen sink" in and make sure it can recline to a flat position for when baby is tiny and varying recline positions.

if you're going to go the washable nappy route have a look at your local council website or phone them, our local council offer grants towards buying washable nappies.

agree with cabbage, sudocreme is the best. I tried other alternatives and they didn't work.

if you're going to cook your own baby food get a copy of the annabel karmel (is that her name, can't remember now) baby food book, I found it very helpful and still cook some of her recipes now for S and J.

something I used on both our littles ones is those sleeping bag/baby grow things, I can't remember what they're called now. when they get to a few months old they kick off all their blankets, S and J used to wake up if they got cold. the thing I'm talking about is like a little sleeping bag, baby can't kick it off and you get a good nights sleep.

Mind you, my sister went for the modern nappies, and apparently they are not all created equal, and normal terry squares can be folded in such a variety of ways that they are still more versatile.

She feeds hers (only just started eating solid food) things like half a banana and half an avocado mashed together as "convenience food", if she is at someone else's house at meal time.
Cabbagepatch

I used to blend a few portions of our meals, fill babysized jars and freeze them. Homemade convenience food!
alison

gripe water.

You will know when you need it, but when you do remember this.

Shake the bottle for about a minute so it is all bubbly, then give the correct dose, depending on babies age.

It is a miracle worker Very Happy You must do the shaking otherwise it doesn't work. I wish someone had told me about that bit sooner.

Yes correct spelling. Best one of hers is 'The new complete baby and toddler meal planner £10.99.

Cooked all of our their meals from here. Used to have a cooking day every few weeks and just fill the freezer, thn B could take meals as she need them.
muntjac

what a waste of 10 quid Wink . just cook what ur doing fer ya selves and blend it up fer the rug rats .that 10 quid can go towards bibs n other stuff.if u cant cook then get ur see babies grandads n nannas if ya start buying books on how to feed babies then your on the slippery road to buying new fashion rubbish for your kids .
TheGirlsMum

We used to cook batches of different vegs and freeze them in ice cube trays, you can then defrost and mix and match.
muntjac

me to mum . i used to get loads of fresh fish check for small bones carefuly and flake it then whilst its still hot run it through a blender .mix with fresh mash and cube it when its cold just plonk a load on top the cube tray run a spatula across it then freeze it . when you want to feed it thaw and just dip it in fresh egg and slow fry it . my kids started growing gills they liked it so much , want em to eat brussel sprouts .blend em Wink .the boys still love home made fish cakes Very Happy

Hand held blender, twintub washing machine (for the "real" nappies!!).

Most useless item, nipple shields..............................
Becki

It wasn't a waste of £10. It was brilliant. I still have the battered copy. Lots of unusual recipies that get kids used to weird veggies etc, with a meal planner that goes really slow so not to rush weaning. Oh and she's been saying for years not to wean until 6 months and what have the Health Visitors now come up with I wonder? Very Happy

Shocked I've never even heard of them Kathy...

Leonie, I think you mean a Babygrow/Growbags. An all in one suit with space for legs to kick around in without getting cold.

When she had her first, my sister bought a modern harness thing, which she found pretty useless, so gave up on. This time round she tried the much older version - right shaped piece of cloth which you can wear in a few different configurations, and it was so good she could even carry the 3yr old around in it for shortish periods. "Modern" takes on things are definately not always better Rolling Eyes
Leonie2

that's it Haize, a growbag! Laughing

that's the one mrutty. book is not a waste of money in my opinion, everyone to their own though. Very Happy

Actually, after being eaten alive for a few days, my midwife introduced them to me and they were brilliant. Saved the day so to speak! Never looked back. Fab way to lose any excess maternity weight as well Wink

I've spent most of my life hiding behind very covering clothes, and have slowly come to the conclusion that it is silly: My OH wouldn't mind if I wore more feminine clothing, so I can't say I'm saving myself only for him, and I bet in 40 years I'll probably regret that every photo of me on a beach shows me as hidden as the temperature allows, and I'll wish I had photos of me looking "nice" to show.

I've resolved not to wear size L mens T-shirts all the time. Though I may have to go clothes shopping in order to do this Confused
