I like most of Jilly Coopers too.

Treasures of the Snow, will add the author later, this was read to me by a lady on the ward, when I was having heart surgery when I was 11, she went home before she finished the book, so she gave it to me, I will never forget this.

Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy (am waiting in trepidation for the film...)
Also, 'Glamorous Powers' by Susan Howatch which really, really made me think about spirituality.
And 'The Eliots of Damerosay' by Elizabeth Goudge, which I'm re-reading again just now and which is so lovely.

is that the same as testimony of youth?

i know she wrote 2 books but i only read the first one, the story of her in the first world war nurses

quite a book
Cabbagepatch

yes it is nanny. It is the diary she kept before, during and after the 1st world war and which she used to write Testament of Youth.

A fascinating woman.

Hi Aqui,

The Joy Luck Club is good, I saw the film first and loved it and then read the book which is very slightly different as it has a more detailed storyline.

Amy Tan also wrote a book called The Kitchen God's Wife, which I tried to read and gave up after about 3 chapters, then I picked it up again a few months later and read it all and loved it.

Its not a good idea to read her books if you are at all depressed as they are a bit sad at times. They are mostly based on mother and daughter relationships and about women who moved from China to America.

That is exactly what happened when I read it! I started and couldn't finish, months later I absolutely couldn't put it down.

I put it down to moodswings.  Great book
