A quick description is "The matting together of wool fibers."
You can knit something in pure wool, then wash it at a high temperature and it "felts" the wool.
To explain the other way I will send an email with PDF attatchment, this explains it.
And then there is needle felting, this is used to create designs and bobbles, or you can make figures with this method, like this http://www.etsy.com/view_item.php?listing_id=35143
The Felting Needle has a very fine, multi-barbed point and when this point is passed through the fibre the barbs collect fibres and drag them into the fabric or intertwine them amongst the other fibres. The needle is repeatedly pushed into the fibres and in doing so rapidly dry-felts the fibre together.

Its really good fun D, my 4 year old neice loves felting and even I managed to have a go! My mum made us all felted soap for christmas, you should ask her about them, they are great!
