I've been relaxing in the garden this afternoon and decided that a glass of wine was in order, of course I've run out so I nipped up to the local shop quickly, it used to be a lovely local store but now it's a spar. The farm shop is a bit of a drive away so I thought I'd break all my usual rules and buy from spar, the other local choice is Tesco who I dislike even more. I picked up a few packs of sausages (we've run out) and read the ingredients, there were about five different brands to choose from....I walked away with nothing for fear of consuming a long list of preservatives and other ingredients I can't even pronounce. Picked up a garlic bread baguette thing and didn't look at it, bottle of wine etc, couldn't find anything else remotely appealing so paid for said goods and left. Just opened the garlic bread to put in the oven now and I read it's made in Germany for an Italian company to be sold here in the UK. For heavens sake, don't we make garlic bread in the UK? Who in their right mind imports garlic bread to this country. Why? Aggggrrrrrrr! Tomorrow I'll be off to the farm shop pronto to stock up on sausages, cream to make butter and some other local ingredients. With the Italian made in Germany garlic bread we're having pasta (heavens knows where that's from!), bolognaise sauce made with west sussex organic beef, and salad made with homegrown lettuce. I think tomorrow I'll make some pasta for drying and storing.

its unbelieveable the country is falling apart with all this EU poo poo, we have so many regulations nobody can make any money so everything comes from abroad, a long standing tradition of Britian being a farming nation is being lost, I tell people of my life and dreams and they think its funny??? Our heritage is being snatched from us!!!
whoops another friday night drunken soap box moment

yah, dont blame the EU - they only facilitate free trade. blame market forces. if it didnt sell / make economic sense, they wouldnt be doing it.
you can make a difference with your own actions.
did you know, jesse, that the Uk and germany trade in 600 tonnes of potatoes every year? beats me why! (that figure could be wrong, could be 6000, not sure on the 00s)

ultimately it's down to consumers to vote with what they put into their shopping baskets, but like me yesterday lots of people don't have the time or even think of looking at where something has come from, I just assumed that a part-baked garlic bread baguette would be local (i.e. UK made), it's not like we can't or don't have the skills and equipment make them here. Svea I can well believe that we import potatoes, we seem to import everything else whether or not it's possible to grow in this country.
