Already? good god. It's not that warm, is it?
Are the BBC doing springwatch still? Might be worth reporting.
I hope they do survive, but doubt it if we get another cold spell.

We've had frogspawn for a week or so now - it has just thawed out from the ice - we had it early and frozen last year and they all seemed to hatch out.

Last year even though it was on the 10th March, that got frozen and it died, luckily we have lots of frogs and spawn so some did survive!!

Ours haven't started yet - and yet last year they had laid by the end of January. I heard them "calling" in December, but nothing happened, so I reckon it must have been a few frog-blokes jumping the gun. It's amazing how the tadpoles survive being frozen - I suppose it's just like suspended animation.

Well, I wrote that and then two days later I noticed EIGHT lots of frogspawn in the wildlife pond, so "hush my mouf"!! Last night it sounded like the African Savannah out there, as the main (fish) pond is now full of amarous frogs - they were really loud!

We have suicidal frogs - we keep finding a pair being........ well you know........... just inside the chicken run. Don't they realise chickens like to eat them?
Suppose their passion gets in the way of their brains
Must go and check the pond for frogspawn.

isn't that normal then?
found a whole load in the bog up the top field this afternoon
it is fairly sheltered there so they might make it if they are lucky and the horses don't step on them

Supose that's what you would call dying for it.....

My frogs and or toads having been getting jiggy with it too!!!!!!!!! Found some spawn this afternoon at the lottie......and so excited, this will be their first year of spawning.....aahhhhhhhhhhhh!
So here comes the poser.....how do you tell the difference between frogs and toad spawn??

Frog spawn is one large lump, so to speak and toads spawn is a long thread of the stuff.

Well. I have a new pond. Small as it is, it has got no fish in yet, as I am trying to control the colour of the water and also the blanket weed. The only thing that seems to be growing is the blanket weed. You may recall that I live on an estate and the houses and gardens are very close. We were moving a shed one day, and this huge frog just sat there. It was a little shrivelled, so we popped it in the pond. We havn't seen it since!!!!!!!!! I was flabergasted to even see a frog/toad there in the first place. Theres lots of places for it to get out of the pond, so I hope it remembers and brings all its friends back for a pond party. Besides which I need it to keep the slugs at bay. They seem to be eating all my plants. Especially the Dahlia leaves!!!

The pond will take awhile to settle down. Oxygenating weed and surface cover all help to keep blanket weed down. If you put a pump in which has a UV light that helps too!
Wait till the spring the frogs will be flocking to your pond!
