Within a few weeks we will all be experiencing thunderstorms with monsoon type weather. The rain will run off of the parched ground and then we will have local floods.
In the meantime the reservoirs will remain one third full and hosepipe bans will be enforced. Like it or not there are serious weather changes going on. Instead of feeling helpless, we could gather as much information as we can about how every single individual can do something positive. Much better than giving in to the "I can't make a difference" type of thought. Come on Potties, time for some action 
Or, we can all whitter here about our worries, discontent and do nothing whatsoever....... Oh dear, have posted this in entirely the wrong place.  Please can someone move it. Hopefully to a "right what can we do" thread

I don't like the idea of thunderstorms with monsoon type weather - I'm getting used to the sunshine  .
Personally we have water barrels everywhere but once they are full the rest of the water runs off. The water in the barrels doesn't last long once it's stopped raining. I'm going to be more careful this year about how many pots I plant and what type of plants I put in them so they aren't as dependant on watering. I don't know what can do from a more global point of view (ie. away from my gate). |

Most of the true facts are hidden from the general public but you can find them on the Internet and more obscure publications. It is MUCH MUCH worse than the governments would have you believe.
Every quarterpounder hamburger containing beef represents the destruction of 55 square feet of tropical trees. Over a thousand years ago 90% of earth was covered with forest, by 1900 only 20% remained - 2 facts taken from a book called "Trees". Of course, I know it's not just the destruction of rainforests thats causing global warming but it is a major contributer. Here is an article from The Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/climatechange/story/0,12374,1546824,00.html My contribution is not to try not to support any of the greedy large conglomerates who don't care about anything but the money. Recycle what I can. Share car journeys where possible. Buy most of my supplies at independent retailers (not supermarkets). Cook most of my food from scratch and grown my own where possible. Most of my clothes are second hand usually from charity shops. There's probably more I can do so suggestions gratefully recieved.

god knows we need the rain but monsoons we certainly don't need
we have a bore hole here for the horses and are on mains water in the house that is metered so we are careful in the house struck me and mr nanny one day though that we still have to be a bit careful of the bore hole because if the water table gets too low, we won't have that facility want to get some water butts going here in the back garden and i shower more than bath, do dishes only when necessary- no dishwasher, and empty the leftover dog water bowl into the few plants that the poultry have left me i am very aware that there is a climate change going on and we are trying to make sure the staff (both of them) are careful as well..... |

Oh yes, water, I'm not as careful as I should be. I'll aim to make some improvements in that area.

It is something we are looking at addressing much more here.
Now veg is in full production we are looking to harvest more form our roofs, and I think we are diverting a couple of gutters, so I understand. (the guttering is on a 100' x 60' barn!) Also the roof from the B&B. We have had the bore hole man out, and are just getting the money up together to have it drilled out. End of the summer I should think, then we will be half and half like Nanny, as OH is worried about the water in the B&B, if there will be enough for all the showers etc. We are also having the man around to talk about a log burner, with back boiler, tomorrow, so that will offset our oil fired boiler heating and water heating. Still trying hard, but could do so much better! |

i wish we could have a back boiler here alison but the wood burner is just a large room heater......if we stuck we could boil water on the top of it but boy would it take a long time
luckily we have an unending supply of wood if we ever get chance to collect it |

We are changing ours to solid fuel too. We have about 6 water butts in the garden which were left by the previous owners. The re cycling is good around here and they take it away every week.
Slowly changing the bulbs to energy savers too. |

we have the eneregy saving bulbs and the recycling here is first class i must say
they certainly seem to be waste minded here in wales |

Spend all my free time turning off the kids' 'puter, the lights, turning lights down, etc. Reusing shopping bage, recycling everything, compost heaps, watering cans not hoses.............After a while you can reach saturation point, think "what the f**k...." and just do what you used to do. Not that that is right, but it's my reality at least.
Then I go back to being good again. |
