Green resolutions

(I'm the resolution queen today!)

i resolve to do the following this year to reduce my carbon footprint....

do all washing (except nappies) at 30C
get loft and wall cavity insulation
listen to my clock work radio instead of the mains powered one
remember to turn off the computer when not using it
and continue not ironing for environmental reasons!

And you?
alison

Could I suggest washing sheets and bedding at 60 C as this is the temperature needed for killing any little bugs and stuff.
TheGirlsMum

If you do all your washing at 30 C the washing powder etc all accumilates in the pipes etc. it needs a good amount of heat to be washed through otherwise hefty repair bills ensue.

Alison - righto boss!

tgm - i use ecoballs (apart from on nappies), so don't use powder.

I'm thinking of getting a new car, which does around 65 miles per gallon and has less emissions than my current car - so that must be good right ?  I drive 60 miles a day, which I can't reduce unless I can find another job that pays similar in my local area (haven't looked in fairness).

We are making a concerted effort to not take plastic bags from supermarkets ... but it is quite hard to always remember to pick up the rucksack before we leave the house  Embarassed

I don't do any ironing - how good am I already !!
Kathy

I already recycle around 80% of household waste and have 4 different bins in the kitchen. I buy 90% of my shopping at the local organic shop, could walk there if I had a big enough back pack to carry the shopping as its only just over a mile.

So I need to change one of the cars (we've 2 between 6 of us) and get it changed for a smaller better MPG one.
Get Greenman's stove put in so the downstairs heating won't need to be switched on at all (we've separate boilers for up and down).
Remember not to run the tap when brushing teeth and encourage everyone else to do the same.

BOOM BOOM !  I like it.

Even worse, I have one of those sainsburys for life bag things in the car .... have I EVER remembered to take it out of the car ... not yet  Sad

I have several linen bags, and have made an extra-big one, which are always in the car.  How often do I get to the checkout to find they are STILL in the car though?  I just put the things in the trolley, only wrap meat in a supermarket carrier bag (which is reused as a bin-liner anyway, or we pass them on to the Health Food Shop).  I have boxes in the boot for tins, and everything else gets repacked into the linen bags.

We put all our fruit and vegetable waste on the compost heap, and have a defunct mixing bowl in the kitchen to put the peelings etc in.  We religiously recycle everything that can be recycled.  We buy meat from known sources (whole lambs locally, whole deer carcass from culled deer at Margam Park), grow some of our own vegetables, lots of apples and soft fruit too.

We have low energy bulbs throughout the house, though they are not good for my eyes, and I have a special sewing light/magnifier for sewing by.  We have a woodburning stove in our sitting room and burn logs from local woodland (including our own).
nanny-now and forever

my collection of bags goes everywhere, rarely have carrier bags any more.....sometimes you need a carrier bag and i don't have one...

this year i plan to grow more of my own and hopefully get my greenhouse up and organised

i already recycle as much as i can and shop less at supermarkets though i probably still spend as much as if i went more often

what i ought to do is not leave the radio playing while i am outside so much and use my freeplay more than i do

once the kitchen is done i must get on with making more of my own dishes instead of buying things.....

i have let it slide a bit in the last year or so
TheGirlsMum

I always try to remember to take my own bags to the supermarket.
We have veg from the box scheme at school (Riverford was toooo expensive and not always great quality) Try to grow some ourselves.
My local butcher is all local sourced meat if we can't get meat from friends animals.

Use bicarb and vinegar for cleaning when I can
I make my own soap and shampoo

We compost our veg waste and keep our own chickens.....

Must try harder
mc55

we've started to compost religiously since we got our kitchen caddy.

I grow fruit & vegetables on my allotment

sadly my OH is not very green, he has his pc on day & night and is always putting the heating on - whereas I'll put a jumper on, or get a throw to snuggle up under.  On the plus side he doesn't drive his car very often at all.  Maybe it all balances out over the long term.
