Help for a complete beginner!Hi everyone!
I'm hoping you can help me out!
I've just got my first allotment (yay) and I am starting to make a plan of when to sow, plant out harvest etc. Most of the seeds I have I can sow end of Jan to plant out at May time.
I was wondering what I could plant right away in my allotment in January or February to get started!
I appologise now for my complete ignorance, I am learning all the time!
Thanks
Amy

Oh hello Bunny and welcome.
Someone with allotment experience will be along to help you out. I'm in the cold north of Scotland so I plant everything later than the "norm."

broad beans - aquadulche and another variety that i can't remember now can be planted at this time of the year
some varieties of garlic
onions (i think - or is that indoor?)
bare root soft fruit

Hello, thank you for the replies and Happy new Year!
I'll try those - can I plant them directly into the ground or is it best to get them started off at home?
I think I will become more of a Spring gardender in time, just getting excited at the moment though and do whatever I can!

broad beans and garlic are best planted direct - as long as the soil isn't frosted or water logged.
good luck!

I don't have an allotment but am thinking about yours in the same way as I approached my veg plot after I dug up half the side garden two years ago!
First of all you need to consider the state of the site, is it full of weeds, does the soil need improving, how much sun does it get etc. If it is a full size allotment are you going to have the time to tend the whole plot straight away?

Hi Cabbagepatch,
They are all good starting points for me, thanks.
It's quite a small plot (5 rods) as there are only the 2 of us. The council cleared it for us so there is not too much to clear, just alot of stones and levelling to be done, which is our task for the next couple of weeks!
