remembered how to knit!

I spent yesterday afternoon in front of the woodburner knitting, once I had sussed out how to cast on that is!

I couldn't find any wool in the loft other than some homespun fleece that Lloyd's mother had spun years ago. So I just knitted away. Its very chunky and I have no idea what I'm doing with it, maybe I can turn it into a cushion cover?

Anyway, advice and inspiration needed please. I need to start with something simple, anything too difficult is likely to try my patience and end up in the fire!! Should I just go to a craft shop and buy some wool and a pattern or what? Confused

A fairly narrow scarf is always a good bet for a starter project, or a big square as a cushion cover. I would head to the nearest shop selling wool and indulge myself . . . I would also go and search online - there are dozens of websites with ideas. Some good "how to" sites/videos as well. Perhaps a simple knitting book (charity shop?) to get you started, and as a reference for the different stitches? Keep up the good work!

Cushion covers are good - simple to make and useful too! My advice would be to choose good thick wool, chunky or even thicker, and big needles. That way, your knitting will grow nice and quickly so you won't get bored before it's finished Smile

Well, I've managed to finish a cushion cover using some wool that Lloyd's mother had handspun a few years ago. It was quite hard to work with, thick in some places and very fine in others but I've finished. Not very good knitting Embarassed

So I've now been shopping and bought some chunky wool and have started another one. The woman in the shop was really helpful and wrote down a simple pattern for me to follow, the trouble is last night I dropped a stitch and am now having trouble sorting it all out. And, I can't remember whether I was on row 1 or 2.

Not sure whether to unpick and start again or plod on and hope for the best Confused

If you haven't done much of your new project it might be better to start again but I'm sure I've seen video on the net of how to pick up a dropped stitch, it would be useful to learn.

Thanks for that link Kathy, I had no idea things like that were out there just waiting to be found!

I managed to pick up the dropped stitch (not toooo much cursing!) and carried on knitting. Coming along nicely although last night I forgot which row I was on again, so the rib has a bit of a break in it. Can't face unravelling and starting afresh, so am going to studiously ignore the mistake!

Am loving it and finding it very theraputic Very Happy

I only recently discovered what kind of clips you can get from You Tube. I always avoided it thinking it was a "young persons" thing!

Carry on enjoying the knitting, it is VERY therapeutic I agree, even more therapeutic is when you "find" a wool shop and get to stroke all the wool (before you get Lloyds wallet out).......................
