Is there anyway to tell...

If a beetroot is woody before you cook it???
nanny-now and forever

if you pick them at about the size of a cricket ball and they have had sufficient water (which no doubt they have this year) then they should be fairly tender when you cook them

I love beetroot. Beetroot and mayonaise sandwiches to be precise! MMmm I never seem to have much luck growing them as they seem to take and absolute age, I forget about them, then I see them and they are huge. The ones I have just picked where planted in May Shocked and are only now a resaonable size!
This veggie growing is hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got a lovely beetroot salad recipe:

Grate boiled beetroot......add chopped spring onions, chopped dill, salt and freshly ground pepper....mix with lemon juice and mayo. Scrummy and the most beautiful colour!!

Spacing Question Probably an issue as plot so small!
Placement Question  What do you mean by this Fish?
