knitting machine

I feel the need....the need for knitting!!!
I'm thinking of getting my knitting machine out from the loft. I'm not very good at it and I do tend to cheat....well not cheat exactly but I get very confused with patterns so I just knit and knit then cast off when I think it's long enough....I do this twice (front and back) then smaller ones (for arms)....cut out shape and stitch together with my overlocker. (I can hear Kathy gasping!!) Anyway....if I get into serious problems (which is very likely) can I give someone a holler....pretty please?? Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Laughing Laughing I'm here and will help if possible, I know how to follow shaping on a knitting machine pattern!

Theres nothing wrong with cut and sew, thats what happens with most fabrics anyway. I've not done it yet but I plan to weave larger pieces then cut and sew, and Mr Kathy has already suggested I do this with knitted pieces.

Wow, I never thought of doing that! Laughing

I think I know how my first ever experiment with a knitting machine is going to go...

But how do you stop it from unravelling really quickly after you cut?

Could you hem the edge and sew together with a sewing machine?

Agh, we really need to get our house finished! Rolling Eyes
Kathy

An overlocker cuts and sews at the same time but I think if you machine stitched using the smallest stitch size, maybe run it through twice that would be enough to stop it unravelling. Then when you cut, leave enough to run it through on a zig zag setting to finish of the edge. I've not tried this so perhaps it should be tried on a swatch first!!
Haize

Embarassed Oh, I did wonder how people using overlockers managed to follow the edge of whatever so perfectly... Laughing
Kathy

I don't know if all overlockers do the cutting bit Haize but mine does! Laughing

Bless your heart Kath!!! I knew you would come to my rescue....Smile Will be getting it down today, have been racking my brains to try and remember how to put it all together...but hopefully it will slot into place when I'm doing it....Smile

Hmmm, well I've had a good look around and have found a manual for the 901 that you can download for £4. Not sure if its the same as yours though, is it like this one? http://uk.three.ebid.net/perl/auc...1162148901-12780-0&mo=auction

2 things for Kathy...
1st....why did'nt you remind me of the pain that's associated with machine knitting??? I have to keep alternating my arms so I don't have just the one looking as if it belongs to Popeye!!! Laughing
2nd...I have some really fine yarns. Would it work if I put two together, or am I risking it all tangling up?
Kathy

I find if I stand up and sort of swing from side to side, in time to the swinging of the arms and alternating hands, I can keep going for longer, like an exercise thing!

I often run 2 yarns together, get some nice effects that way. If you have a wool winder you could wind 2 strands into 1 ball first. Smile
agapanthus

I hav'nt got a winder but I thought that would be the way to go Smile Thanks Kathy.
agapanthus

Quite glad that the yarns I chose to double up on did'nt get put on a winder Kathy. The patterning has come out really well and not at all uniformly. Am really pleased with it. Smile
Kathy

Oh, thats good Agapanthus, any chance of pics? Smile
agapanthus

Hav'nt actually finished the jumper but will take a pic of how the two yarns look together if you like?
Kathy

How are you getting on with this Agapanthus?
I can't wait till I have room to get my machines out again. Very Happy
agapanthus

I made a couple of jumpers....they're not too brilliant (not good enough to post a pic on here)...but they'll do me for the lottie!! Smile When I have a bit more time I'll make some more in a finer yarn.
