On an altered art forum I belong too, we were asked to make a page for a book for a ladies birthday.
It is to be a surprise. Lots of the artists do stamping - seems to be all the rage. I have some arty stamps but don't seem to be really 'arty' using them.
So this is what I made instead - it is an A5 page.
I painted one side of the paper with several shades of pale lavender and lilacs - its a bit paler than in the photo.
I painted thick gold paint on the edge - and made it gungy and textured - it feels lovely.
I made a paper sachet and filled it with lavender from my garden, then on tissue paper I painted the butterfly in water colours then several layers of gold. In real life it looks like a littel satin cushion.
The sachet is off centre as I had to allow an inch for the lady to bind the book. I wondered if it looked a bit bare - and was thinking of stamping some butterflies on it - then decided not too - in case I messed it up - I couldn't make another one!
Here is the reverse.
The other side of the page is totally different. I painted it matt black - several layers, then thick gold paint again to create a texture - looks like black velvet it real life with gold braiding!
I enlarged an old photo of a Victorian birthday card, and painted over it to enhance the colours and make it look like an oil painting. I think I made her look a bit like a gangster's moll with the red lips More gold paint for the frame, and a spray of sealant (aka hairspray - which I don't happen to use on my hair just for art work).
These are scanned pictures but it is hard to show how it looks - much shinier and the lavender is paler.

My next challenge is to make 12 charms - art crafty ones - so can't 'just' do beads on wires.
Any ideas greatly appreciated - not too hard! I might use bottle tops - recycled!

Those are so beautiful and original Lottie - I especially like the reverse with the little Victorian girl. I owuld never have thought of painting on top of the photocopy. I particularly liked the gold "dragon's claw" design on the black. I don't know about making these as swops or whatever - I think you should be making these to SELL! Don't hide your talent under a bushel.
Have you thought of bread dough sculptures for the charms, enhanced with metallic paints perhaps, and glass beads, ribbons or something?

Salt dough is easy to make and use! Fun as well!
I really love the butterfly side, best. I like the idea of putting the lavender in, clever!!!

Thanks Libby - I have spent the afternoon 'playing' with bottle tops and making them into charms - not finished yet - but watch this space!

I've made lots of salt dough figures in the past - I still have one from a flock of sheep hanging on the kitchen wall by the inglenook in fact. It's a good medium for smaller things too. But then so is modelling clay, have you thought of that? I like the sound of your bottle top charms!

Thanks - I am exploring lots of things - will let you have a preview of my bottle top charms - just have to get to grips and drill holes on them and perhaps add a bead or two
