MantlepieceOkay, this is the finally finished product, a pig slaughtering bench made approx in the early 1800's. My parents had it highly waxed indoors in their cottage, as a bench, and I've had it in the shed for a year , and before that, for a year in the garden. However, with our new hearth, we needed a new mantle, so I cut it in half longditudinally, sanded it, CP waxed it with beeswax, and I mounted it using 12mm threaded bar countersunk into the wall, fixed with chemical anchor, and the bench pressed onto it. Looks ok???

Looks nice, Nanster. What kw output is it/....looks quite big?
Make sure the wood underneath is only seasoning, not catching light though.

it is a 5.5 kw one and kicks out just enough for us lloyd
the heat circulates a bit round the house as well which means the rooms don't get too cold despite the central heating not coming on
no- the wood underneath didn't catch light, didn't stay there long enough really
we mix wood with some coke we got for free last year and brought with us from suffolk (stingy or what) and it keeps in nicely
i personally didn't want one with a hood, i like to be able to stand a kettle on it but never mind
it looked a lot bigger in the shop actually

I think ours is 5.5 too. Yours looks quite big in the picture. I'm using palletwood that I get for free at work, and chainsaw up before bringing home in Maureen, who incidentally has new "eyes". I just retrofitted halogen lights to replace the old style ones, so now she can see in the dark.
Although my pay is unelievably cr*p, I make it up in other ways, like the firewood. We also get as much free fresh bread as we want, because t is baked fresh in the store, and if unsold at the end of each day, is litterally thrown away!!!! .........Needless to say, we have a lot of bread in the freezer!!
