My jam thermometer has alcohol in it i think, it has a red bar not silver and i just picked mine up in a hardware shop.
I didnt think that the mercuary ones were common these days as it is such dangerous stuff

Hang on a mo - mine is also red inside. Does that mean it wasn't mercury in the first place? I just assumed it was!

No mercury is silver, it always is and can be no other colour as it is a liquid metal.
We still have mercury thermometers at work but the nurses have special hazadous chemical training to deal with spills and the likes as it is really quite dangerous stuff.
If yours was red it was most likely an alcohol thermometer and much less dangerous ( well the filling is less dangerous than the broken glass would be.)
as a side note Milleners (Hat makers) used to use lots of mercury and it was absorbed through the skin and affrcted their minds hence the term as mad as a hatter
