Not another Child!!!

I heard on the news today that another child has been mauled by a Rottweiler dog, so who's fault is it do you think the type of dog or the type of owners?
Kathy

Owners, no doubt about it. I know tons of rotweillers that are wonderful family dogs, you only hear about the bad stories in the media, nobody writes about the good ones.
nanny-now and forever

agreed kathy

you need to be a very responsibile owner to have a dog like that though

they are after all bred to be guard dogs, not family pets

i like them but would never own one
TheGirlsMum

My friend breeds them an has just had a litter as she says they always have bad press as she has a litter to sell. The mother is lovely.
Becki

They had a dog expert on after the news release. He said every owner is responsible for everything the dog does, not the dog.

I blame the owner EVERY time, whatever breed of dog.  We are their pack leader and as such should dictate what they do, when they do it, where they do it, etc, etc.
nanny-now and forever

i agree with all that oaf course but i still maintain that the breed was developed for a certain purpose and has the instinct to do certain things

it isn't a family dog, it's a guard dog and perhaps the child made the wrong move and instinct took over.....

so yes i do blame the owners
Kathy

Yes I have noticed that the breeds that make the news for turning savage are generally all initially trained to guard. Alsations and Dobermans for example. I know a few from the training classes and 1 in particular is quite nasty despite her owner "loving her to bits".

I think it is down to the owner too, but, I will qualify that by saying that it also depends on the breeding stock.  Here in Wales we have puppy farms.  The owners don't give a damn what gets mated to what as long as they are the same breed.  Hence you get dogs with a strong chance of inherited problems such as eye problems, hip troubles etc.  They don't sell to the public - a "man with a van" has pitch on the market and the puppies are handed over to him there and then sold on to unsuspecting punters.  How else would you get vicious Labradors?  One of our neighbours has a kennels - possibly a slightly better one than most as they do have the puppies innoculated and involve the vet if one is ill, BUT, this same couple were telling us they wouldn't breed from one of their GSDs as he was "too soft" and a waste of space!  They once took their bitch to be mated to a dog who was known for being a bit "sharp" (they wanted "guard dog puppies").  This dog was SO "sharp" that he didn't want to mate with the bitch at all, just to KILL her.  They had to get her out smartish.  With people of this intelligence you are going to get some very ill-gotten puppies . . .

Yes I agree some breeders don't give a toss,my Mother-in-law had a Cairne Terrior cute looking little white dog,he had a wonderful loving home,he bit me on the arm, leg, and hand one day when she was passing me a biscuit,it went on to bite the man next door and a lady who was visiting, and was finally put down when it went for my Mother-in-law and made a real mess of her leg,it had no reason to attack anyone,so can only be down to the breeding, when she got it as a puppy I said why didn't you give a stray a home? oh no she said you don't know what you are getting Confused

a few years ago my husbands niece bought a 8 week old puppy i cant remember what breed it was now but they payed £400 for it from a puppy farm. when they had had it foa a day i went in ti see it and it was laying in its bed not moving and didnt seen to be well so i acked if i could pick it up,now hubbys niece isnt stupid but she said "i dont think its very well jackie because its got all STUFF coming out of its rear end" i asked for an old towel picked the puppy up took it over to the french doors and crawling out of its rear end were WORMS i got a piece of the towel and pulled gently and the worms were coming out by the dozen i have never seen any thing like it in my life befor, i told them to phone the vet RIGHT THEN they did altho they werent to keen the vet took puppy to the surgery and said the dog has been born with them and the puppy farm must have known what state it was in when they took it home....of course it died.i have a friend who is one of the judges at crufts so i phoned her and gave her the name of the breeders and she got them closed within two days and band from selling dogs again,my point is when you get a dog from a puppy firm check them out first dont just blunder ahead and think that they have done everything they should to make sure the puppys are fit. this is all true and i will never forget that poor little dog as long as i live  Crying or Very sad
Becki

At least someone cared enough to look after that one though.

I have just found this thread.  I absolutely adore Boxers.  A long while back now, I remember seeing something about two Boxers attacking a child or something.  As far as I know Boxers are such mild tempered dogs, and couldn't see them hurting anything unless they were goaded to do it.  I had a Boxer for years. She was the most beautiful mannered dog you could ever wish for, especially when we had another puppy at the time and the puppy was a bully to her. I think it is all in the way the owners treat them. My Boxer was afraid of motorbikes, men with beards and people in uniform.  I think she must have had a very bad experience at some point, but still she wouldn't harm a hair of any one's head.

I like boxers Janowl and I do think it is mainly the owers fault if a dog bites, unless like my Mother-in laws Caine Terrier it was breeding that was the problem I always give that type of dog a wide berth if I see one which is unfair of me,but like the saying goes once bitten twice shy Confused
