oh DearWell it looks like i'm going to have to give in to my son who has asked for a snake or iguana for his birthday (these smilies realy are helpful)
He will be 15 at the end of this month, i dont suppose by any chance any one can think of an excuse for me not to buy him one?
Or if i do get him one, is there any type i should be looking for? obviously with this being he's first one i would like something that he will learn from but wont take too much to keep happy.
Regards
Didi

Seriously though, has your son done any research into the looking after of reptiles? I've no experience but have read that it's not as easy as people think and quite a specialist thing. Are there any "experts" you could contact to find out the ins and outs of keeping reptiles? I hope I don't sound patronising but make sure that this just isn't a whim, these animals live for a long time and guess who'll get left with it if the novelty wears off!

I'd say a Rat Snake would be more suitable

my son keeps exotics and although he loves them to bits, quite often it becomes an expensive pet
and they grow really large and unhandlable if that is a word
can't he have a guinea pig or something?
at least you can cuddle a guinea pig...i could never see the fascination for scaly pets i am afraid...

Nope, I always said that they could have whatever pets they liked as long as they were cute, furry or feathery.
No.1 son thought a tarantula was cute and furry but it had too many legs for my comfort so he had to settle for some mice

How about giving him an area of garden & challenging him to see how many native species of reptile he can attract...

My neice has a Garter Snake (I think) she has had it quite a few years and has had to upgrade its accommodation a couple of times (BIG expense) as it grows!!!!!!!!!
I recommend Guinea Pigs I used to breed them and they make fabulous pets!!!
