Pip ChallengeI grew a ginger root, yep the type you pick up in a supermarket to grate into cooking and also I grew a date stone which is still growing strong and is turning into a nice palm. I spoke to a lady yesterday who had grown a mango and thats when I came up with this idea.
It will cost very little and we and even our children can join in. I did this about a year or more ago on my blog and it proved very popular.
The challenge is to grow a pip, seed or whatever.
Just to give you an idea as to what can be grown, orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit pips, apple pip, avocado and plum, acorn, sycamore, grape, pomegranate anyway I'm sure you get the idea any pip or stone goes.
So is anyone up for a bit of fun in the garden, greenhouse or window sill let me know and it commences as soon as you like, just do a post let us know what your trying, what works, what didn't and then post some pics along the way

I'm afraid I'm absolute death to plants when it comes to germinating them - I'm the only person I know of who failed to get nasturtiums to grow
However, I'll watch this thread with interest as I've seen photos of your ginger plant Libby and I think it's beautiful

Well it gave me the excuse to put some fresh ginger in the shopping on Friday, Lady Sparhawk did point out that I had some in the freezer so I had to explain...

Here we go two seeds in each pot! Should I leave them outside, New Zealand has a temperate climate?
|

My 'The Pip Book' (bought at a charity shop) says ' a high temperature is not needed, put seeds on windowsill, covered with glass or polythene, is all that you need.

It was suggested to me once "Go Grow A Tree" infact I've managed to grow 3!!! well chuffed! 3 Orange Pip's not sure what type so I'm calling them "Morrisons" lol.
Abit miffed to put it politely... at first as a slug had been hiding in the compost and tried to distroy our efforts but sorted that out with a good dose of salts
When I picked off the half chewed leaves I was suprised how much they do smell of orange oil, I'm woundering can you cook with the leaves like lime leaves?
|
Libby

wow well done, they look good plants!
No idea about the cooking with the leaves though!!

Kiwi seed still growing! re-potted it today.
Apparently they can be trained like grape vines, so very optimistically looking forward to a kiwi fruit plot divider!

In the dim and distant past we used to call them a 'jerry' no idea why, probably racist!

us colonials used to refer to em as "the po" but i am familiar with the term gazunder pmsl but the best one was referring to the outside loo as the "thunder box" always made me chuckle but of course the correct welsh term for the lavvy at the bottom of the garden path was "TY BACH" pronounced tea ba ending with that sound we welsh make like a cat shifting a fur ball or clearing phlegm from your throat CCCCCHHHHHHH
And just as a point of interest my grandmother (mams garw) had a two seater and the plank was well sanded so no splinters we was dead posh
Sorry libbs but i seem to have taken this thread just slightly off topic but there ewe are thats just me being me
