This is what I spent the afternoon making:
The backing, binding and batting is from leftovers from J's quilt. I had the blue patterned fabrics in my stash, they're from a batch named "little house on the prairie", very pretty denim blues.

Beautiful.
Lovely straight quilting too.
I especially like the "my stash" comment. You do realise that you've caught the bug now, don't you?

Girls!! help me while theres still time! I havent had any direct prompting from n yet....( ).... but already i have a material stash building!!!
it was bad enough when the wool stash took over the cupboard under the stairs, and 3 more sewing machines moved in, and then all the soap and card making stuff took over the utility room and parts of the breakfast room...... but the material pile is growing, and the strong will (yeah right!) is wavering...... advice gladly welcomed here!!!....

that looks like a nice easy one n. I'm looking for ideas for S as he wants a quilt. I was thinking of geometric patterns using plain fabrics, including denim, so that might be a possibility.

Oh my goodness, I have finally realised whats wrong with me and I have to say that it may not just be n's doing either...I am now obsessed with seams and selvedges, I have a rapidly growing 'stash' and now I spend a large part of my time going around charity shops for things that I could cut up to make into things, I dream about wool and tensions swatches... All of this in the space of about 2 months, before christmas I didnt even know what a selvedge was! I have to say that I think there are several of you in this together in an attempt to take over the world and turn it into a GIANT QUILT.... come on own up! you know who you are...
PS. Jesse I love your quilted place mats

Those are absolutely lovely! Well done!!!
I think my mum might have the "stash" record. She's got two wardrobes full (literally - the bags fall out if you open the doors) of fabrics in the spare room, 20 storage boxes of fabric on shelves in her work room and rolls of fabrics leaning against the workroom wall. But then again it isn't a hobby for her!

Plocket, you mum's room sounds like an aladdin's cave And greenlady, I'm the same now, some of S and J's old clothes are stained and no good for charity shop donation, instead of letting OH have them for rags I now look at them in a very different light, cut out the stained bits and you're left with some lovely swatches of fabric.

Well the best way to start a stash is to raid someone elses!!! Other than that, charity shops are ok but where we live they aren't high on fabrics. If you go to a shop and see a fabric you like, then just buy a bit! Ok so it's not a cheap way of having a stash but at least you'll have bits that you like. Another good one is to contact fabric shops and ask if they've got any leftovers from rolls of fabric. You'll have a stash soon Lottie and just between you and me my stash is tiny!!!

So do you just buy cotton or which material. The charity shops in the town just have old blankets for pets and I don't see material as such, but just in case.
For example - to make a place mat that is washable and heat proof for the table.
Do you buy cotton and not polyester mix etc. Is there a link on the web or can anyone recommend a library book to whet my appetite?

I have absolutely no idea about books, but I'd say stick to cottons. They are the easiest fabrics to work with and if you want to make something like placemats then they won't melt!!!!! Not sure what wadding to recommend though.

Lottie, I look out for cotton fabrics. I always check the offcut bin at the local sewing shop, I've been eyeing up some of J's soon to be outgrown clothes which are mostly cottons. And I browse ebay and see what's on that I like. If you're using second hand clothes for cutting up, have a good look at the age of the fabric, J's clothes are okay because she grows out of them so quickly that the fabric is practically new still, I wouldn't use something too old otherwise the fabric could deteriorate very quickly and I'd be heartbroken for that to happen once I've put so much effort into making a quilt or something.

n can recommend wadding, I can't remember what it's called now but what she gave me is brilliant. I also forgot to say that the backing for J's quilt and the placemats I made is calico.

Lottie, I will start your stash off in exchange for the beeswax.
I need to know what colours you would like to play with.
I just finished a quilt for someone so I have placemat sized pieces of batting all washed and ready to use, too small for a quilt, so you would be giving them a good home.

the slippery slope Lottie! the slippery slope!!
I found 4 gorgeous pieces of afbric today in the charity shop- two quite parge pieces were a pound each, two smaller pieces were 35p and 50p. all are cotton, and all lovely varying floral prints. when i was putting them away later this afternoon, i realised quite how many i had stashed away!
so run Lottie, while you can!

n, do you have a secret room on your house........full of batting. I'm still using that hefty piece you gave me!!
I've got bits of fabric all over the place, still not found a proper place to keep it all, might have to take over Greenmans room..........

I bought a bale about ten years ago, not sure how much was on it then, maybe 50 yards??? it's 80 inches wide (folded in two), and takes up about 40 inches by a foot wide rolled onto a tube. It's tightly rolled so it does fluff up when you wash it. I just looked and there are 12 yards left.

Would that be England v India on Thursday? Don't think that they have decided who's batting yet - or have I lost the plot
The slippery slope indeed - need the dictionary now!

Brilliant response! Still haven't looked it up yet. Will definitely look for scraps of material today in town after physio.
You have already got me thinking..............I wonder if I can make new scatter cushions for the lounge. I could cut up the cream ones and make patchwork ones, or look out for creams and terracotta.
Better learn to crawl before I start running though huh?

After physio it definitely is the front crawl - and OH took one look at me and said, 'I have never seen you look so white, straight home for you I think' And for once I didn't protest.
Waste of time doing my hair, putting my makeup one, and blusher - still I looked good when I went in
