Plucking Ducks!

Just had a phone call from a friend of mine - who has just had a visit from the local game keeper on his way home from today's shoot.

He had a dozen ducks to sell - £1 each - how many did I want. Hmmm

OH doing grumpy old man impression - not as if he has to gut them or anything

When I get pheasants I usually skin them - I found it was quicker.

Never been a plucker - but how easy and quick is it to pluck a duck - tips mrutty or lloyd or somerset lad?

I opted for 4 - worse case scenario is that they get a humane burial in my garden and a little plant on top.

Best case is I cut and pluck beautifully and have a perfect bird.

Compromised version - I tear my hair out and gut an skin them !

Place you bets now Laughing Laughing

Any smart alec going to ask me to do a workshop on this with colour photos Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

wear marigolds .a trug of "to hot for the hand " hot water dunk them in and count to 60 and pluck them away .do the wings to the frst joint .when you have all the feathers off rub them down with the flat of your gloved hand and the down will come away .dont worry about singging them as cooking them will do that i do about hundred a season and probably 500 pheasant , as well as partridge and goose

I just knew you would know. Shame you don't live nearer - I could do with lessons, and I am not as strong as a man.

Having thought about it - I might Just do what I do with pheasants when I get them and skin them.

I won't bother with the wings of the ducks as they are not really worth all the effort on a wild one I don't think.

So I guess you work in the industry or do you rear ducks too.

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply - I do appreciate it.

£1?! (Nope, that's not to hide a swearword, though I am in disbelief!)

I'd have had them all... Except for the lack of freezer space, of course.

How difficult is it to actually usefully collect the down?
lottie

Do you need some then? There are duck farms all around here Laughing
Not enough in four ducks to fill a pillow.

Guess you need a work with muntjac - he's the main man fowl wise.
Becki

He's logging on later, just for you Rolling Eyes Laughing
lottie

Just off out to do the deed - collected them early this morning - could have had 16, but I don't have enough hours in the day at the mo

You can buy them around here for £3.50 already prepared. These are wild ducks, but bred for the shooting season.

I know it is a controversial issue. Hereabouts it is the way of country life.

Hence my putting the topic here seperately from the usual daily thread so as not to offend anyone.

It can be deleted today as I have my answers. Many thanks
Becki

Well he obviuosly didn't log on. If you need anything else just give me a shout.

I wasn't offended BTW Very Happy

Job done - and in the freezer
Becki

With the title plucking ducks I thought you'd been overrun with ducks instead of rabbits
Kathy

Don't delete it Lottie, everyone lives differently and it really doesn't offend me to hear people talking about "controversial" issues. I'm sure other people would be able to make use of the information. Smile

Ok Kathy - I am very sensitive to other people's beliefs, ways of life, and opinions, and would never wish to offend or upset anybody - hence my offer.

I know that vegetarians are members of our site - (I was one too for years until I was ill and was told that it was because I was not getting trace elements and I didn't want to pop pills to replace them), so I know that this particular topic could have upset some people.

Thank you for your understanding.

Freerange, wild game, are in the main, the healthiest option if you eat meat.

They have virtually no fat, are extremely low in cholesterol, which is a very important factor, and eat good and healthy food themselves.

That is the basic reason why I take the opportunity of 'wild' food.
muntjac

sorry i was out shooting rabbits . im a part time ./retired keeper and pest controller , also on call for road accidents with deer etc , am always able to answer at some point if i can . ""absolute genius when it comes to useless knowledge ""
muntjac

sorry to disapoint ya lottie ,, but duck are very high in fat and cholestrol ,,,,,, 5 heart attacks and a triple bypass testament to that lolo ,, but im still eating them Wink
Haize

Oh great, I'd better eat more duck then. I have low blood pressure, and need more cholestrol to narrow my arteries to increase it Rolling Eyes Laughing
lloyd

I'd have gone with Muntjac's option. Its more work plucking, but wild duck can be tough, so the skin keeps the meat moist as it cooks.

Oh no - is that really true? I was told differently. They said the wild ones are fine in that respect. The person who told me that is a farmer's daughter and should have known Sad Sad They eat lots!

There was no fat on the ducks I dressed Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Well I gave two away to my family and have two left. So as the 'experts' always say, that you can have a little of everything, so long as you don't eat too much of any of the 'baddies' too often then it won't hurt. So that is what I shall do. I will not be put off after my all hard work, so there Laughing Laughing I have already bought the oranges for goodness sake!

I know that pigeons are a no no for anyone with heart problems, but even then one now and again won't hurt - but you will never get me eating one I hasn't to add!

A bit late now Lloyd Laughing Laughing

I know you guys and your cunning plans - there is absolutely no way on this planet that you are going to get my ducks - not after freezing my little tootsies off in a dark garage during a power cut!

A very very slow cooking in red wine and orange, will do it Lloyd. Or else I can have duck breast fillets - maybe bashed a bit like you do tough steak.

I am off to look this up on the net -

I AM GOING TO EAT THESE DUCKS ONE WAY OR ANOTHER

I know your game Laughing Laughing Crispy duck anyone? You make the pancakes then, someone else can chop up the spring onions, and you can watch me eat my crispy duck Laughing Laughing

All this talk - my stomach thinks my head has been removed I am so hungry - I will have to go and boot my OH out of bed - I fancy porridge and dried apples. Rolling Eyes
Haize

We're having duck with orange sauce tonight too Lottie! Very Happy

I really like crispy duck pancakes, but it looks like a nightmare to prepare (hang the duck overnight in an airing cupboard or similar?!)
muntjac

i am sure pigeons are low in ch as they carry no fats, and i eat dozens when i can hit them Cool
Libby

muntjac you make me laugh, the first picture that came into my mind was you driving down the road zig zagging everywhere trying to hit the darn things, Idea then it dawned on me what you ment Rolling Eyes hopeless I am!!!!
muntjac

you may laff ,but i actually drove over a wood pigeon pecking at something on the ground i was sure it was hit on the head by the bottom of the mini ,i stopped hoping to pick it up and was amazed to see that this bird was carrying merrily eating spilled seed, i approached it and it didnt fly off till i made a grab for it Laughing

on another occasion my ex was driving and a partridge flew out and was hit by the car, it went to the ground like a brick , she stopped picked it up and came home , i was due to go out later , and i got in started the car looking into the reversing mirror i saw this partridge sat on the parcel shelf looking at me , i got out and told her indoors to come and remove it . she did and as she carried it back to the house it died in her hands .. always knew that woman was bad luck Surprised
lottie

Now now Laughing Laughing

You might have gone after her and given the partridge the kiss of life!
muntjac

sure didnt wanna kiss her Laughing
lottie

Behave Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes You did once Laughing
