I'm not entirely sure but I think you have to use frontline on the chooks and scrub out their house. I'll ask at the farm and get back to you.

You buy Red Mite powder from a Countrywide store or similar! Clean out there coop shake it all around all the nooks and crannies and crevices, then cover each bird individually! Then repeat at regular intervals especially through the summer!

PS you can usually tell because the eggs will be covered in little brown like dots which when washed are actually red!

you can tell if you have them, by going into the chicken house at night, and lifting the perches, and looking on the end.
Also, when the chooks are roosting at night, take one out, and lift its wing and brush backwards, onto a piece of paper, and some should fall, to indicate.
Treat hens with a powder bath, can be put regularly into a dust bath afterwards, if you want, and scrub out the house.

Thanks for the advice folks, I got some stuff and scrubbed and cleaned the coop to within an inch of its life. Then at bedtime the chooks had a little dusting!
When I checked this morning I could still see some of the nasty blighters so will have to keep up the treatment until they are all gone

I've no experience of this CP, maybe Agapanthus will know, she's got tons of hens.

Right according to the Omlet site 'Red Mite can transfer to humans and may bite! Doesn't say anything about dogs but I will ask!

Thanks for that Libby, I'm a long lost member of the Omlet site, hadn't thought of checking over there.
