Not sure if this is the correct place for this post....perhaps Jesse could move it if I'm wrong. Anyway, I need to lose about a stone and a half...and I'm also trying to give up the ciggies So was wondering if anyone could give me a few good sensible pointers.
I do love my food....make everything from scratch; butter, bread etc. I also have a spinal disease which stops me from doing too much excercise, (hence the not being able to run Jesse) Last year I managed to put raised beds on the allotment...knowing I would'nt be able to do much more heavy work, but obviously not doing as much as I used to plus having spent too much time indoors this winter, the weight has piled on
I need to sort myself out a sensible but enjoyable eating plan and I need some help. I love flavoursome food..especially spicy! and apart from a few thing, I eat virtually anything, but do love the carbs Breakfast, I always find is very difficult, it's easier to have something like scrambled eggs on toast, than to go for a bowl of cereal...which I find does'nt keep me satisfied for long.
Anyway, enough rambling. I f someone could steer me in the direction of a good eating plan or has any good ideas they could share with me I would be very grateful.x

for the bread lover in you try and find a really good rye/wheat and rye mix bread. if in doubt, bake your own. the best ones would be sourdough rather than yeast raised ones.

dunno where you are in the country - but me as a bread lover/german i can find good bread in london, but not as often and convenient as i'd like.

neal's yard dairy sell a range of breads from poilane (a french bakery near victoria station)

other than that, can you ride a bike? there are lots of different types of bikes out there, i am hopeful there will be something suitable for your bad back/spine.
i cycle commuted to work all of last summer and lost a stone without even changing my diet - some of it is back as winter insulation but will come off (and more) from next month onwards.

otherwise, what about walking? i dont mean the leisurely type, but a brisk walk - of course you could choose a scenic route my dad, who suffers from diabetis II goes walking every single day for AT LEAST 1/2 hour to help with his blood sugar regulation - it burns calories for sure, brisk is the motto though - uphill is also good.

does this help at all? or are those things you already do?

i can sympathise with you because i too love my food - though i have in the last year (since the allotment) taken to eating food lower in sugar and salt - and higher in flavour (spices and herbs)
also worth checking out Glycemic Index for various food groups as the lower GI foods will mean you are full for longer and dont get tempted by snacking.

I'm not very good with dieting agapanthus, I usually eat the same things but cut out all junk food, dish up smaller portions and try to up my exercise levels, which in your case wouldn't work. Is there some sort of gentle exercise you can do? I remember at my pilates class there was a lady who joined and she had back trouble, it was quite bad as a lot of the exercises she wasn't able to do but she did manage a bit and she was sent to pilates by her consultant because of the gentleness of the exercise. I've got a book here at home that is packed with low fat recipes, I'll have a look through and post some of the recipes in the cooking section, I think D might have started a thread on healthy eating. Perhaps we can all populate the thread with different dieting recipes then those of us who want to eat healthier for a while have lots of choice.

Swimming is a really good form of exercise as its non-weight bearing so should be fine for you. Its also good for increasing suppleness and is a good cardiovascular workout.

I wish you all luck. I'm hopeless though!!! I'm cuddly, have no willpower, and am quite happy the way I am. So I'll offer support, hugs, etc. but won't be joining in!!!

Paula....The other night I only had a couple of left over bits of cheese.mature cheddar and some wenslydale. Cheese & crackers is my favourite snack and I could see the cheese wouldn't go far.......I also had a tub of light philadelphia in.so I melted the 2 hard cheeses very slowly in the bottom oven then gradually stirred all of the philadelphia in + some mustard + worcester sauce...it was absolutely gorgeous and made the cheese go further as well as decreasing the amount of hard cheese(calories) I was eating. Great also on toast!

If you love carbs and scrambled eggs on toast, slimming worlds 'green day' might be for you. I am happy to post how to go about it if needed. I have lost 3 stone doing it.

i don't think you should try and give up the weed and lose weight at the same time, tackle one thing and get that under your belt before starting the other

i have never smoked but have lived with people that do and both of them found that you can't do both

breakfast is really themost important meal of the day so you have ot have something...if you are into cheese, what about edam which has a lower fat content ...have a weighed ounce of cheese and maybe an apple or a tomatoe or something like that for breakfast with some crispbread, anything but do have breakfast

as for exercise, well do what you can that is different from your daily routine and always do everything in an exagerated fashion.

even if it's the most boring thing in the world................ironing

Thanks so much for all your replies.
SVEA......I'm half German..so my mum always fed us well! I live in Suffolk and unfortunately there are no decent bakeries and I adore sourdough bread, so I'll continue making my own. Will definitely try GI foods.
JESSE.,....Some low fat recipes would be great, thanks.
CABBAGEPATCH.... I'm withe Paula on this one....I look gross in a costume...but thank you anyway
D...will definitely start drinking more water
PLOCKET....you hit the nail on the head!....I wish I was happy with the way I am...but that's another avenue I should take. Thanks for the hugs
BECKI...was thinking along those lines...tried it once before but I don't have the books anymore....don't actually fancy taking a class but don't mind trying the green day/red day approach
NANNY...whats ironing? Oh I know....it's the thing that hubby does on a saturday!! I realise that doing both things together is going to be difficult but I do love a challenge! And maybe if I succeed in one thing it might give me more hope to try the other

Green days are when you can eat as much pasta (dry) and potatoes as you want and not count them ie: free food.

You are allowed 2 healthy A's a day which are 1pt if semi skimmed milk (goats, etc) and 28g cheese (chedder, edam etc)

2 Healthy B's a day which are wholemeal bread or rolls or your meat like 85g beef or steak
57g minced beef
113g veal
85g lamb
113g chicken or turkey
85g lean bacon or gammon or ham
113g pork
113g kidney
113g liver
170g cod, haddock, hoki, lemon sole, monkfish, plaice, skate, whiting
113g hake, halibut, sea bass, turbot
579 herring, kippers, mackerel, salmon fresh
71g salmon canned, sardines fresh, and sardines canned in tom sauce
85g pilchards canned, smoked salmon and trout and fresh tuna

various nuts are inc.
28g of most healthy cereals I can go into more detail if you wish.

You choose between 5 and 15 'syns' a day to go on your extras, like crisps, (Quavers and frech fries are good) or chocolate if you can't go without, marg, cooking oil etc.

There is tons of free food to fill up on like fruit and veg and eggs are free too, as is fry lite so on a green day i can have a pile of egg, mushrooms, quorn sausages and not even have to count them.

muller lite yogs are free and i eat them by the bucket load.

My typical day could be

yoghurt and fruit for brekkie

fruit for snack

homemade veg soup with wholemeal bread

fruit for snack or toastr if i'm really hungry!

pasta and passata sauce with mushrooms and onions,
or a jacket spud with cheese and tinned spaghetti or beans.

Quorn meals are quite low in syns and i really like them.

confusing i know please get back to me it really works, it's just hard to explain without typing my whole handbook.

What Becki has failed to cover (and she is very naughty at not doing it her self) is that they recommend a pint of water first thing in the morning, one for lunch and one for tea. If you can up it to a litre each time then you can't fail to lose weight.

Also try eating as early as possible in the morning even if it's only a handful of grapes and trying to finsh eating by 6 in the evening.

Have you had a look at Gillian McKeith?? I know most of you will probably go NOOOOOOOOO, she's all over the telly, books everywhere, magazines and if you see her face one more time you will hunt her down and chuck her in the river. She is an irritating woman.
But seriously, she has some great stuff in her, 'you are what you eat' book. I had a look at it last year when I was getting a bit down because I wasn't getting nearly as much excercise as at home (no horses to ride!) I thought my diet was OK but on reading her book I was amazed at how limited it was. It wasn't that what I was eating wasn't healthy, I just wasn't eating even nearly enough of it! Her recipes are very easy to follow, there's a wide variety of food and they are delicious. It was quite exciting to start something new. I felt great and was getting up earlier and earlier every morning, going for a walk then starting my day with a smile.
Now I'm a lot more relaxed about it because there comes a point when one become too obsessed about being healthy! That in itself is not healthy. I still eat well (mother dearest is a healthy eater anyway so I had a good base to start with) but I still have chocolate. I go walking the dogs at the rescue centre and sometimes play frisbee for excercise. Or i'll just go out for a walk, I live in the welsh valleys and there are a serious amount of hills!! It's all about balance, you can eat healthily and excercise, but there is nothing wrong with having chocolate sometimes. If we didn't treat ourselves life would be rubbish.
Anyway, I have the book if you'd like to borrow it. If you like it then you can maybe consider it for yourself. Let me know

I wondered what you meant there Mark, I know there are loads of books out there written by supposed "experts" so I went googling and found this page if anyone is interested in some of the rants about Gillian McKeith.

http://www.jmdl.com/howard/rants/Gillian_McKeith.html

Personally I liked some of the recipes and ideas in her book, whether they are "scientifically proven" or not, or who wrote them, matters not a whit to me as long as I feel better/lose weight/feel more energetic. I've used smoothies, raw juice, have done the whole wheatgrass growing thing, but don't follow any one way, it's what suits you personally that matters. (IMHO)

That was interesting reading Kathy, thanks for posting the link. I sometimes watch her programme on TV because I find myself gobsmacked at how badly some people eat and then can't understand where they're going wrong. A lot of her advice to me is common sense and good advice, but I did always wonder how she can look at someones tongue and make the statements that she does with such accuracy, bit naughty I think trying to imply knowledge and qualifications that she doesn't have.

To be honest I have the same view as mum, if it makes you feel better why not do it? I dont have a telly so I never watch her programmes.
Ok so people argue that a lot of what she says is common sense, but if it's so sensible why don't more people do it? I felt so much better after following some of her tips it was unreal and regardless of her qualifications her book helped me and thats all that matters.

I only came across Gillian a couple of weeks ago...also checked out her book...fasinating reading. Watched last night's programme...astounding! I've never eaten like that and I do try to watch what I eat...but am really going for the pulse thing at the mo..much to hubby's chagrin:)...and now the better weather is here I can potter on the lottie to my hearts content, it's excercise but not too extreme. She can be a bit in your face....to say the least!!!....and I'm not sure I could lose weight if I was ordered to!!
Would'nt mind a look at the book....really interested in getting some good recipes together....it's going to be a long term project
