sewing machine problems

I attempted to use my non-electric sewing machine for about half an hour the other day, before I gave up and sewed up the hem of my trousers my hand (which took another hour!)

Problems were:

1. Machine kept jamming, so I couldn't turn the handle. There's a cog to turn to unjam it (at least that's what it does, I'm not sure if it is supposed to!)

2. Then the thread got drawn down into the bottom spindle and I ended up with all the stitches getting tangled in the machinery and having to pull it all out.

I used it about a month ago without this happening. I'm not sure where I'm going wrong this time.

Ideas please?

I've a non-electric sewing machine, and absolutely no clue how to use it!

Thread getting drawn down underneath might imply that the tensioning is not right? That cog could possibly be the tensioner, and it was jamming to start with because it was too high, then catching because too low?

I say this because I have looked at the one I have in puzzlement, and discovered that turning a cog made everything stiffer or freed it up when you turned it relative to the handle...

ooh - good point. Now I think about it - I think you might be right. If I turn the cog too far, it all goes slack and stops working altogether.

I'll have to have another go at the weekend - as long as I can get T to move it - it's way too heavy for me now!

They do weigh a ton, don't they?!
