I saw some smoked, pickled quail eggs in our farm shop at £2.75 for a jar containing 10 eggs. Now i pickle some of my quail eggs so i got out my little hot smoker and hey presto, i could make a mint, but i enjoy eating them and sharing them with people that drop in.

Isn't it eggcelent Nanny, eggciting and eggtreemly eggtraordinary that people pay such eggspensive prices for a simple quail egg. sory Nanny ,got a bit carried away there, must be the effects of the Ardbeg. Well thanks to Tesco it's not eggspensive.

You are every inch , a Lady Nanny, lesser mortals would have talked about sell by dates and daft things like that ,but not you, stiff upper lip and take it down the throught like a true Brit. Nice i'll bet., partial to a bit of Talisker myself. ( when theres no Ardbeg or Laphroiag around.)

I guess if you can't bring yourself to sell the eggs, you can at least marvel at the money you are *saving* by not buying them at that price!
On another note, I felt so mean when I ate quail, they're so lovely... But I don't think I'd keep quails just for the eggs, that's just so much effort for so little food!

i was going to sell the eggs haize but it just didn't work out, they need artificial light really to lay well enough and i don't have the facilities for that....so we just kept the birds and the dogs get the dgs in their supper dishes...........
they are nice little birds, very busy....i was told they lay every day for a year and then die
well mine lay only rarely and are now about 3 years old.............something wrong somewhere...........

Meh, maybe they only have 300 and something potential eggs, and give up when they've run out!
More seriously, it could be that the encouragement to continually lay does deplete their strength.
A friend and I so nearly bought a pair of quails once, just for pets

SL did you hard boil, peel, smoke then pickle your eggs? Do you think I could try it with duck/hens eggs? Simon loves pickeled eggs and this would make a nice change.

I don't give my quail artificial light so i get eggs .1 per hen every day, (no misses) from early April until late October. Nice. But they do go on to lay for the second year on on after that. so worth keeping in my opinion, then you have the cockbirds for meat.
