Sock machine

My sock machine isn't really a sock machine as such but a gadget that knits tubes, like french knitting only larger. Can't download pic to PC at the moment, but it looks like a mini oilrig. I'm experimenting at the moment finding out the best way to do things and which yarns work best.
I did these in a couple of hours, cheap acrylic yarn but they don't look too bad as long as you don't look too closely!

I've seen one of those before. I guess you can vary the size a little by altering the tension, as tighter stitches will pull in more once the work is away from the device?

How on earth do you start though?
Can you do the equivalent of knits and purls, or only knits?

I should imagine it might be quite good for doing sleeves for jumpers Laughing
