Sunday Trading

I hate it. Twisted Evil Bring back good old fashioned family values that's what I say. Anyone have a view?

I'm cross because I have to work Christmas Eve and it's on a Sunday. I told them I go to Church to which they replied I could have a afternoon shift, or a 5am -9am shift. Which either means I'm knackered and won't be able to enjoy the children, or I end up away from them the entire afternoon Evil or Very Mad

My point exactly. Lloyd has to work too. Why does anyone need to be shopping on Christmas Eve anyway Rolling Eyes

I also have to work on christmas eve, the shop where I work is open 11 till 5. I dont have any choice, everyone has to work christmas eve, its also a form of blackmail, as anyone who doesn`t lose their christmas bonus, which isn`t very much in my case, its a weeks wages, but as I have a 15 hour contract, thats what I get 15 hours extra pay at minimum wage ! Even though I`ve been working my socks off the last few weeks.

I quite agree, we would be lost without them, my brother has worked over Christmas for years Sad

But there is a huge difference between vital services and people going shopping. After all, there is a whole year to get organised.

we have huge targets in the shop from now till christmas, you`d be amazed at what people spend on chocolate ! Christmas week the targets are around £4000 - £5000 a day, and we usually take more than that and we are a tiny shop ! People go crazy !!

I used to love it when Sundays were quiet. Now there's so much pressure to get out and spend spend spend (not that we do!) The streets would be quiet. Everyone would be at home enjoying their family and sunday lunch. Now they all go off to those churches of consumerism.

What I used to love as well was Wednesday early closing. (although now it would make my life a bit tricky as I have wednesdays off). But with a bit of planning and forethought, it would all be ok.

You see that's what gets me - 24-hour shopping culture (while I appreciate it must be good for those who work awkward times) is just another way of encouraging us to make imediate impulse purchases. why can't we ever wait or actually plan ahead?

grr - consumerism.

The only problem being that everything being closed on Sunday is a fairly religious thing, and therefore would inconvenience those who have no reason for it to be anything different.

However, no-one should be coerced into working the days that they do not want to!

Not just a religious thing, but a day for families to be families as well. Smile

Apart from the dreaded Tesco, nearly all of the shops here in Helston do close on Sunday and some still have half day closing on Wednesdays!!!!

I suppose so, unless you all have flexible working times, in which case, I guess it would still be good to pick a particular day.
