the great soap challenge

Who's in it? When do we want to do it?

I can post recipes, instructions etc if anyone wants tutoring!
Jacky

I would like to, I have some stuff but a bit scared about how to do it without blowing my house up   Rolling Eyes
Lizzie

I'd like to too, but I'm scared as well  Laughing

Don't worry, if I can do it, anyone can! I have got the sodium hydroxide on my skin before as well. it doesn't hurt that much and you can either neutralise it with vinegar or rinse it well with cold water.

you'll be fine!

I've added a couple of stickies.

So when shall we do it? Do we have anything for March?

Do any of you have any special requests for recipes?

Skin type?

Smelly soap?

Easy to get ingredients?
Lizzie

Highly perfumed things tend to bring me out in a rash, but I guess that's synthetic ingredients that do that.

I once bought some fabulous vanilla soap from the Eden Project - do you have a recipe along those lines?

I need to get a couple of sugar thermometers but apart from that, I think I've got everything...
Aqui

Lizzie - for perfumes I've only used essential oils (mostly lavender and geranium) as I have very sensitive skin. i have got a recipe for vanilla soap, but it uses "fragrance oil" which i think is artifical. i've have a look around for more.

if its for march you could always get a bottle of oil that you are going to use in the soap and add a vanilla pod now and it should be infused by march, you could spilt the pod open and scrape the seeds into hte oil and then add the pod but this would mean there was little black vanilla seeds in the finished soap
Aqui

Pilsbury - I'm ashamed to admit I don't know how big vanilla seeds are. I suppose you could add some oatmeal too and go with a gritty soap.

I think it would work with vanilla extract as long as it's oil based.
Kathy

I'll have to opt out of this one, I'll be following the thread with interest though.  Very Happy
Pilsbury

if you have ever had good quality vanilla ice cream it might have seeds in, they are about the size of grains of castor sugar or salt but they are soft not gritty
Libby

I can do vanilla Very Happy  I saw some vanilla pods the other day, so what type of oil do we use so I can start infusing Very Happy

PS I saw your stick on the how too, which is great. please can we have a list of ingredients  Laughing  I'm not sure I could wait till March Very Happy  I'm quite excited Laughing

What sort of colour does it come out??
Aqui

Pilsbury - that sounds like it'd be ok.

Libby - I will post the vanilla soap recipe later. The oils used for that soap are shortening, coconut oil and beeswax, so I think it'd probably best to infuse it on the cooker in some shortening. It doesn't have any liquid oils iin it. I've not made this soap before, but i think i'll give it a try too.

Most of the soaps I've made have been white or cream. I would imagine this would too.

So would you melt it put the pods in then let it set again and leave it for awhile?
Is shortning, like 'Trex'?

I would so love to join in with this one but there just aren't enough hours in the day at the moment.  I have a Melinda Coss book if anyone would like to borrow it.

One day I shall have time to indulge in all the things I want to do.......
Lizzie

I have two sugar thermometers now ... Very Happy

i'm not sure if it'd work when solid. so we could do either a hot infusion (done on the cooker) or mix and match the recipes

yes

Thanks for replying CP and Kathy. Maybe next time!

did you make the shampoo bar that you sent me for my birfday?
TheGirlsMum

Yes I did Libby but that was some time ago. I got the recipe off a web site somewhere I will look it up for you.

You dont have to use it as a shampoo it works well as a normal soap but lathers really well and gets used up very quickly.

I added the Tea Tree oil not only as an antiseptic but also to guard off little visitors from the girls hair. Not suggesting you need this but with two girls at school with hair that reaches their bottoms very necissary in this household. And it works, only had one visitation so far. Fingers crossed and touching wood.....

I have made some ordinary Lavendar soap this morning so very proud of myself, sorry I couldn't invite you along it was a spur of the moment decision.
Libby

Brilliant, I love it, makes my hair lovely and squeaky clean!  I'm really looking forward to this soap making, did yours turn out really lavandery?

Have we an approximate date for our soap making???
Libby

anyone done any yet??
