ha ha - I got a crochet hook last summer and its not been out of the bag yet, except for me to take it out and look at it in wonder a couple of times

I'll try and sort something out over the next few days unless we have any expert crocheters (sp) that would like to do this. I've done a bit of crochet over the years but only just started following patterns so class myself as a beginner too. I do have lots of books with diagrams for beginners so I can scan them in. I also have a book that has 200 squares of different patterns. They're graded from easy to hard and at the back of the book there's diagrams on how to do the stitches. Perhaps we could start off doing one of these simple squares?

I can only do 'granny squares', so a demonstration would be good for me too.
My lovely mother in law used to crochet for Britain - she much preferred it to knitting. Teaching me how to do it was on the list of things for us to do but alas, we never got around to it...

E goes back to school next week so I'll get something sorted then. I thought I could choose one of the easiest squares then use the diagrams to do a step by step.

We have a blanket on the end of our bed that my mum made from all the odds and sods of wool she had in her wool bag.Its made up of granny squares, which is very apt as she made it for her 1st grandson who is now 24.It was the last thing she made before she died, so is rather special.
I can do the stitches, but can't work out how to join in the ends when you change colour.

Hmm, many years ago my grandmother taught me the very first basics of crochet.
Since then I have done an "aqui", bought the hook and then looked at in puzzlement......

Just found a great site, I was looking for crochet for beginners as I wanted some good pictures. It's arranged in 11 lessons so all I need to do now is decide which square we're doing!

Let me know what you think of the site and if we could manage to do a square from those instructions.

Hi all,
if you want to jazz up the old granny squares, there is a nice pattern for a cardi/shrug in the Rowan "AM to PM" book. The design is called Meg and I am making it at the moment. I prefer knitting to crochet so I have never really made a lot of things with crochet, just blankets and small stuff.
Anyway, you use about 5 colours of DK wool, make squares by doing 4 rounds in 4 different colours, mixing the order up a bit, then the 5th round is done in your main colour.
You make 60 squares and then sew them up to make 12 rows of 5. This will give you your main rectangle, then you pick up stitches at either end and knit ribbed cuffs and then pretty up the long sides with a row of crochet.
It looks very pretty if you use the right colours. The pattern suggests you use rowan alpaca that costs about £6 or £7 per ball! It also says you need £13 x 50g balls! Its nice but not that nice. I got a bargain in my local Army & Navy store and bought a load of Jaeger Matchmaker Merino DK for £1.50 a ball. I don't think that it will take 13 balls, probably about 11, I bought 21 because I know I will use the rest and it was a terrific bargain, gorgeous to knit/crochet with.

I managed to find a picture of it, it does look nice. I've never done anything like this but it shouldn't be hard to make a rectangle, thanks for the tips.
