Waste collection center

Just went to the local waste centre , well 12 mile round trip actually, to get rid of the stuff that accumilates over the year, shed clear out, . I had to take the trailer because of all the plastic that blew off the poly tunnel ,a couple of old bikes, and an old calor gas heater.
Got there only to be sent away because I had a double axeled trailer. WHAT Shocked I said its only house hold waste mostly for recycling,. Sorry Rolling Eyes said the attendent cant let you in, you have to apply for a permit beccause you have a twin axeled trailer. Exclamation Back home I went waste in tow. Phoned the local council office, 10mins on phone, asked for a permit, Yes sir the operator said, not a problem, you can only use it once though and you cant apply for another one till next month. After takeing down the car registration, color of the car, what type of trailer, a list of the waste which collection center I was going to,my name and address, she siad that the permit will be posted out to me.
Great Ive got the permit ,but what a waste of time and resources this turned out to be, 1,the first trip to the centre, 2, the time on the phone,3, the paper work envolved,4 the paper used to write the permit on and the envelope,5 the cost of the postage,6 the second trip to the centre.
No wonder so many people fly tip. Luckily Im on a week off from work so I can go back to the center and didnt have to empty the trialer because it was needed for something else. Mad

annoying isn't it. I think they have that policy at most places now.

we have that problem, all our domestic waste has to be loaded into my car because they won't let OH in with his van.....they think it's commercial waste then and they don't take commercial waste here even if you're willing to pay for it. as a business we operate responsibly and what can't be recycled is put into a skip which we hire for each job, but I can understand why fly-tipping is such a problem around here. the nearest commercial dump is a 10 mile drive each way, most rogue builders can't be bothered with the expense of skip hire and they won't waste their time or money to dispose of the building rubbish sensibly so it gets dumped in little country lanes instead.
nanny-now and forever

they are much better with waste and recycling here than in suffolk we have discovered

there only papers were collected and that was every other week.....everything else had to be taken to a tip but not every tip will take plastics so we had to save all our plastics up and then make a special trip on our half hour lunch break to get rid of the thousands of bags of milk bottles that we had been trying to find space for

then to add insult to injury, we couldn't take the ford ranger into the tip proper, we had to unload it outside, ok so we do that, then you had to feed the plastic bottles individually (yes individually) through a grill on top of the skip

could i be bothered is the phrase i used more than once...........

here, we have recycling bags and all recyclables apart from glass are put in the bag and left for collection with the other rubbish........it goes to a recycling centre where it is sorted by hand

so much easier and makes me happy to recycle my stuff

What a career move that must be then Nanny. What do you do then Dai? Well, I sort out the recycling rubbish by hand. You should see what some people eat . . . Note to self, make sure all tins are completely washed and shiny inside (I do anywya, but now I shall get paranoid!)

We sort all ours, but the collection people won't take the campers for the summer holiday weeks, as they make too much so I have to fill the car and post the bottles one by one.

If the bottle banks are full they go straight in the crusher Confused

Its crazy isint it . We all want to do more towards recycling but it seems that the facilities to do it wont allow us to recycle in a consumer friendly way Confused

I guess we're pretty lucky here, as we've a full sized bin to put recyclables except glass in, and it is taken once every four weeks. Not quite enough if you've just bought new stuff in big cardboard boxes, but for normal months it is ok. My OH used to have a van through work, and he had to go to the tip on Saturdays with it: I guess they're theorising that if you are taking stuff there then, it's probably not for work.

We now have a bin for garden waste too, which is taken every four weeks in winter and fortnightly in summer. The only thing that is in our hands to do something about is glass. Guess what we have a giant heap of in our garden... Rolling Eyes Meh, every few months we eventually remember, pile it all into a box, and take it to a bottle bank.

I have to say though, I'm still thoroughly horrified by the volume of stuff we put in the 'normal' bin. There is something massively flawed about the whole idea of thinking you can just throw all that junk in a hole in the ground! Going to have to do more about that once we've sorted out the house (I though if we had a "green cone" or similar, that would help a lot).
