Waxed circles in jam making - which way up?

I am having a very senior moment - must be the heat.

Just opened a new packet of waxed circles for jam making. It says to put them on the jam wax side down, but does not say if the shiny side or the dull side is the waxed side!

I have made all these preserves recently - ran out of the waxed circles, bought a different make - and for the life of me can't remember which side up or down I used the others.

Used all the others up and thrown away the packet.

Doh - what am I like??

Anyone know?

I [i]think[/i the shiny side is the waxed side. I have greaseproof paper, which id non-shiny, and waxed freezer paper which is shinier, so I think the wax is the shiny side....
If you take a circle and dribble a bit of water on it, the waxed side should have the water running off it, and the non waxed will absorb the water... at least that's what logic tells me!

I put mine in shiny side down, not sure it that's right though.

I hedged my bets as I just had to make a decision and did some one way and some the other way.

It probably doesn't make a huge difference - just might take of a layer of jam or jelly when you pull it off. (She says hopefully with fingers and toes crossed!) Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

I don't expect it will make much difference. Isn't the purpose of using them to close the air gap between the jam and the lid, either way will serve the purpose I expect. Very Happy

hello lottie, the disks should go shiney/waxed side down, the idea being the wax melts and makes a thin airtight layer. worth a try and a lot cheaper is to make your own, just roll out the grease proof paper and rub a non coloured/scented candle over it,brass rubbing style, then cut out yer disks.
