We have a hedgehog!!!
At the weekend, during one of my rare moments of energy, Mr Aqui and I tidied up the cupboard under the stairs (which is actually located outside as we live in a maisonette) and should rightfully be called the pram shed!
He was moving loads of rubbish (mostly all the stones and rubbish we've dug out of the soil and never got rid of!) while I cut back my poor neglected garden. "A, I think there's a hedgehog in here", I hear from across the garden. I dash over and see a prickly thing poking out from beneath some plastic bags. It could've been a hedgehog, dead or alive, we weren't sure, or maybe an old brush.
Slowly he removed more bags until it was revealed to definitely be a hedgehog. It wasn't moving. I stared at it for ages to see if it was breathing until everything else appeared to be breathing! Still convinced it was dead, I suddenly noticed a fresh poo hanging out its bottom. It's alive!!!
We left it alone while we had lunch (with much discussion of hedgehog poo!) and later returned to find it tucked in the back of the cupboard, so Mr A could continue his tidy (thoroughly supervised by yours truly) without disturbing the poor little creature! A path was left for it to go out for nocturnal slug slaughters and two happy gardeners completed a worthwhile day's work!

That is a rather odd way of finding out whether it is alive or not...
Lovely that you have one, I like hedgehogs

You will have hedgie all winter by the sounds of it - seems like he is about to hibernate.
Ours does it under the shed!

You should give it a name
How about Colin?

Colin (Becki - the name seems to have stuck!) wasn't there at the weekend. MIL had very sweetly taken all the rubbish from the cupboard, so COlin had nowhere to hide. I hope he hadn't got into one of the bags.
We've filled it up again, with stuff from the shed I promised T isn't rubbish and yes I do need that, and that, and that, so hopefully he's found it comfortable again!

We have to be very careful that we DON'T get hedgehogs because at least one of our teriers has learnt how to kill them
If this terrier doesn't come in with the others last thing at night or first thing in the morning we go across the garden armed with a bucket in case there is a hedgehog to rescue!

That must be one well 'ard terrier!
Our dogs just shout at hedgehogs and look perplexed - we think all the hedgehogs in Northumberland must be deaf!
