I have been browsing around the soap kitchen site but am slightly put off by the lack of info about postage. Buying a 500 ml bottle of coconut oil could prove expensive because of the weight.
If I want to go for whatever is readily available, what would you suggest?
I can probably get aromatherapy type oils in Boots.
Is there any other source of things like coconut oil?

Which recipes should I try next?

Find out what oils are easily available to you and work from there, olive and sunflower oil are easy to get and beeswax should help to give a hard bar of soap. If I don't have a certain oil for a recipe I want to try, I replace it with something i do have and then check the saponification values on the chart and adjust accordingly.

I have bought coconut oil in a tub for 99p in superdrug, near the specialised hair conditioners.

My mum rang tonight and said she has found coconut oil in the Indian grocers round the corner from her, 99p for 250mls, but there's a superdrug near work so I'll check that out too. Thanks Alison, for the suggestion.
Jesse you are as casual about adjusting all these highly scientific recipes as I am about fudging seam allowances, so I guess we are quits now!

That is the bit I find scary. I really have to take the plunge. I agree about postage charges due to weight.

I would like to use coconut butter and maybe olive oil, sunflower oil, or rapeseed oil. or shea butter. All of which I have, but no recipes to fit!

I guess once you get started you gain confidence and it is all plain sailing.

make a few according to the recipe to get your confidence going, but there's really no problem to substitute oils, but always check the saponification charts to calculate the caustic soda and always keep in mind the properties of the oils you're using....what I mean is if you choose only oils that give a soft bar you'll end up with a soft bar of soap, if you use a mix of oils including some that give a hard bar (e.g. beeswax) then you'll end up with something longer lasting and less likely to go soggy. Provided you calculate the saponification correctly the worst that could happen is you make a bar of soap you don't like e.g. too soggy, don't like the texture, fragrance etc., but it will be soap.

Thanks Jesse - I will have to set my self a target date - by the end of March I must make my first batch of soap.

Slapped wrists if I don't do it
