It's usually irregular watering. The tomato sits all happy....it's skin getting tougher.....then someone comes along and pours water all over it and the (thirsty) tomato sucks up all the water....too quickly and splits!!!

I found a couple of answers Libby, I think you might have been watering too much.
When they get close to being ripe, cut down on the water. The tomato is expanding more than what its skin will allow.
This one is easy to answer. It is from too much water. It can happen anytime before the fruit is ripe. Most likely it happens in the late stages of growth.
If you water and then it rains that same week, always pick the fruit as soon as you can. It will ripen in any sunny place inside the house.
Common causes are overwatering after long period without water, overfeeding, just once every one or two weeks, and if they are in direct sunlight, only water when its cooled down or early morning. Also do not touch the plants without hand washing if you smoke. There is a condition called "catfacing"its from the stem, when temperatures are extreme ie:- hot and cold. There are some varieties that are prone to this, and pitting too.
