Winter blues

Right then. Who is feeling fed up this month with the post Christmas blues, darkness and rain.

It seems that everyone I know, family, friends and work colleages are all really struggling with the grumps.    I believe that the environmental changes have a part to play.  Weeks of torrential rain and darkness v bright, cold frosty weather.

So.  We have to get on with it.  I have got my lightbox out again, 20 minutes each evening.  More exercise would be good.

How is everyone trying to cope with this particularly grim month?

i think i am suffering a bit

accompanied with all the other stuff i have not felt myself lately
mc55

yup, it is a miserable time of year.  I can't wait for March when I'll be driving to work in the light at least one way.
Kathy

I don't get depressed as such but do start longing for a bit of dry warm weather. I make sure the energy levels are kept up with doses of spirulina (seaweed), healthy food and no sugar or caffeine. Do you find the light box helping CP?
Libby

They where saying on the news that this time of year is bad for most people, post chritsmas blues, payday still a way away, travelling to work in the dark and back in the dark too. Sadly I don't think your alone!

Ditto Kathys comment on the light box, do they work?

I think it does although not sure whether its a placebo (sp) effect.  Doesn't matter really.  Anything that lifts the mood has to be a good thing.

Talking of mood lifting I'm off out now for a long walk with the dogs.  Shame its dark but the exercise and fresh air always helps!
Libby

I have walked for the past couple of days, I am lucky enough to be able to get out during the day, but when the rain comes, I don't have dogs, so I tend to stay in Rolling Eyes
nanny-now and forever

with my three dogs and the lifestyle i have to go out every day so that isn't the issue really

i think that it is just depressing

our stuff is always wet, the dog jackets don't dry out either and i have no real space to hang everything to dry them

we have waterproofs but once you start working in them you get too hot and then you take it off and so you get wet again..

viscious circle in the rain
Jojo

Another wet day here again Sad I have done all the cuboared clearing, and all those bits that have been hanging about,it's been three days of almost non stop rain and the weekend is not getting better,no wonder people get down in the dumps, was it like this last year Confused
nanny-now and forever

don't think it is due to get any better here till at least next wednesday

what a bummer...............
Kathy

I've noticed all the fields around here are water logged, not much grass left, just a quagmire. I'm trying to think of any blessings to this time of year, the only one I can think of is "This too shall pass."  Rolling Eyes

that's what we all said in the summer though and it didn't............

still it is only january and there is plenty of the year left and we have only just really started on winter.....

i am sure that the weather will break soon enough and we will all be moaning about something else....

at least the bad weather makes us appreciate the subsequent good weather even more
Kathy

I remember last year everyone moaning about the heat!
kaz

Farmers have told me today that February is going to be frost, frost, frost (and were moaning that it would be tooooooo cold Shocked )
Kathy

Bring it on!  Proper winter weather instead of grey sludge.  For me nothing is nicer than getting wrapped up warm and going for a stomp with the dogs on a frosty day.  Then coming home and lighting the fire.

Even wandering about the garden noticing frosty cobwebs and tiny shoots pushing up through the earth is uplifting.

Just had a quick glance out of the window......still grey muddy sludge  Evil or Very Mad

make sure you get out at lunchtime when you're at wotk. get some of the daylight, even if it isn't sunny.

eat healthy, as Kathy says - keep up your energy levels with slow release complex carbs, rather than getting a sugar rush. bananas are great and also boost the seratonin levels.

november is the worst month for me. i usualy quite like january - it was always the start of the growing season as i'd sow my tomatoes, peppers etc then, which got me looking forward positively to the summer.

kathy - is seaweed a calcium supplement? i'm after a natural calcium supplement now i'm dairy free - although i also have fortified rice milk.
Kathy

Yes I use it for that too Aqui, it's a bit of a "miracle" food really, we don't make enough of our seaweed.  Smile
Cabbagepatch

That's interesting Kathy, I didn't realise it was a calcium supplement.
Kathy

This is the info about it. Smile

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that grows in warm, tropical, alkaline waters all around the world. The ancient Aztecs of Mexico used spirulina as an important food staple to balance out their diets. Today, spirulina is considered one of the most highly nutritional protein supplements available.

Spirulina is roughly 65-71% complete protein and an excellent source of amino acids, including methionine and l-lysine. Specifically, spirulina contains calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, chlorophyll, vitamin E, vitamin A and B vitamins.

Spirulina strengthens the body, providing essential nutrients that are typically depleted when the body is weak, for example, during and after illnesses or chronic diseases. Spirulina has been used as a blood purifier and artery cleanser, and it may be used to stimulate the thyroid, increasing energy levels, and to detoxify the kidneys and liver.

Spirulina also helps suppress the appetite and may be used to treat eating disorders and assist with weight loss programs.

Spirulina is easily digestible and a valued food source for vegetarians.

I was definitely going to get some until this bit "Spirulina also helps suppress the appetite " I really don't need to eat less!
Kathy

It doesn't supress mine at all Aqui! What I'm presuming it means is that when you eat food that doesn't give the nutrients you need you just feel hungry again very quickly, it's the body trying to get the nourishment it needs. If you're properly nourished it won't affect your appetite, if you know what I mean!  Smile

Actually I've just been goggling and it seems it's not recommended to take when breastfeeding anyway - not enough studies done and possibly too much mercury. oh well...

sorry for hijacking the thread!
Kathy

Oh well, perhaps something to think about later when you're not feeding anymore. E gets a daily dose too as her diet is pretty restricted, we worry about her getting the proper nutrients.  Smile
